Educational Savings Bonds

The Lämminator
Back in the 90s (the late 1900s LOL), the US government created the Education Savings Bond program and interest earned on those bonds is not taxable when used toward education (there are restrictions on usage). My daughter was born during that decade and her grandparents gave her bonds and my husband started earning bonds through his employment with the government that did matching amounts. We thought that they would mature and we would make a huge ton of money to go for our daughter's college education.

Well, that didn't happen. I mean, we were able to use the bonds for her college but we never really earned any enormous amount of interest. The best part about the program for us was having my husband's employer (the government) pay for half the bonds.

Would you consider purchasing bonds to be used for education for your child?
