The message contained details of a project I might be starting too, Which the admin has told multiple people about. Which to me, Is a further slap in the face.
I personally never say anything private or personal via PM on any forum (unless it is a forum I run or help manage and I know no one will read them) as you never know who might read it. There are many ways that the content of PM's can be seen by people. Via addons/mods, directly through the database, you or the recipients forum account being accessed by a malicious person, you or the recipients email account being compromised allowing the malicious user to reset the forum accounts password and gain access, unsecured backups of the forum database, the forum or server itself being compromised in some way, an admin changing your password and viewing your PM's and so on.

There is a mod for phpBB and it is used on a well known phpBB run promotion forum.
You wouldn't be referring to this board, would you?
Nope I would not, the board I was referring to is banned here 😛
Am i right in thinking that this forum being referred to has recently changed hands (again)? If so then it doesn't surprise me.

I would never read members PM they are private and would only read them if they are forward to me as the are meant to be private

You are correct 😉

Its sad that the privacy was breached like that. But regards to this forum were it took place, lets give the new owner a chance.

This topic is giving negative publicity to the forum in question were it happened.

And so it should, if a forum is doing something like this people deserve to know

Its not a forum but a person who did it. But I get what you mean and you are right in a certain sense.

How is the forum getting negative publicity when the forum hasn't even been named? Anyone that knows the board in question obviously already has a negative image of it and anything said here won't change that for the better.

Also it is that person representing the board. Admins are the ones who affect their boards reputation so I don't see how that reasoning makes sense.

Yes you are correct.

Well recently I fell victim to somebody reading my private messages via some sort of addon on their forum. They read my PM and didn't like what I said so they confronted me about it and basically attacked me. This was minutes after I had sent the pm and it hadn't even left my outbox.

What do you think of forum admins who invade their members privacy and read their private messages?

I think it is disgusting, It has made me lose all trust in private messages actually remaining private.
Ive been in the same situation before (admin reading my PM convo and then getting all mad).

I know that PM's can be monitored but I just expect most admin's NOT to read them. That being said, I rarely have PM convo's with anyone anymore, I just tell them to email me.

Anyway, I dont read other people's PM's my forum. Its none of my business. If they were saying bad stuff about me, staff or the forum, I'd rather not know about it... If its something they want the world to know, they'd let the world know it.

I hate the idea. But for a MyBB forum, it might be necessary to have an addon like that, as they don't have a "PM report" feature. So, if a member have a problem with PM's admin might have to use such addons to solve it. Ofcourse they can read it directly from database, but many people aren't smart enough.

If an admin has such an addon for a software like phpBB which already has PM report feature, or if the admin uses such addons in any software to read members PM's unnecessarily, then you should stay away from such Forums.

I learned about the existence of this mod some years ago in a VBulletin community by discovering the conversation I had with a friend who was a newcomer at the time to the place through PMs being PUBLISHED on a blog online.

I understand his concern about his community and the public opinion but posting publicly information that was shared privately and wasn't even directed to him was not only shocking but highly irresponsible of his part.

I think it is good to know the mod is available in case of emergency, but that aside I see no reason to have it already installed and ready to go. I understand the 'need' some feel to watch over. However if you are going that path then at least have the maturity to not abuse the system and respect the information you may come accross.

Pro tip: Don't send anything that you wouldn't want the world to know via PM and you won't have problems.

If you don't want the whole world to know something then send it via an instant message or via e-mail as no one but the recipient will have a chance of seeing it unless the person you sent it to decides to pass it around.

Even if the owner is decent, he can very well sell the forum to someone else who doesn't give a shit and reads that stuff for his own enjoyment. It's just safer if you don't bother using the PM system for important stuff.

It is their forum so it's their right to do it, but if they do it, they need to state that they do it in their policies somewhere. It's only fair.

loololololooloolol

how does it feel now that your dearly beloved admin Fowler can read ALL. YOUR. MESSAGES. :OOOOOO

I don't support the reading of user private messages. It sort of invades the fact that it is private.

They are required by law to have that message present somewhere where it's noticeable,
In what country?
USA for sure, I'm sure some other advanced nations have similar laws.
I've never heard of such a law.

There isn't such a law in the USA.
