Are hate crimes still a real problem?

As long as people exist, hate crimes will exist. No, we're not doing enough about it. I think it's more of an issue now than ever in America, especially because of the president that we have. People feel like as long as a racist is in office they have the freedom to be publicly racist.

I agree 100%.

Saying this in a non-offensive way, but I feel social media has become the main source in the hate - as a group of punks are spreading hate, cowardly, while living in places where they won't get teased or beaten up for what they say. I noted this in another thread.

Hate crimes do exist. But they're pretty rare in the first world anyway. We've made pretty huge strides towards getting rid of issues. And although things are not perfect yet, still some ways to go and room for improvement. Things are a lot better than they were.

In other regions that's not necessarily the case. Like in Syria where gay people were flung off the roof of a building. Hard to call that anything other than a hate crime.

If anything a lot of the major hate crimes we hear of now in the first world are fake... People claim to be persecuted for attention or sympathy or even financial gain. Remember a few years ago the pizzeria owner who claimed he was attacked because he was gay? He later admitted he faked the whole thing. And how about that cake the pastor ordered that "came with the slur scribbled on it"? Yep, turns out the pastor added that. And there are undoubtedly way more that garnered attention instead of any actual hate crime.

Not sure if that's true or not. Note, not trying to get anyone's bad side (bringing up racial issues) - but I have to say that a lot of racist crap is unreported. For instance, in my area (in the southeast US) a black man/white woman couple with mixed kids was harassed out of my valley.

A lot of these racist people are doing things very undercover - but still doing massive damages, and I've heard even more stories. But people don't want to believe these stories and also they're sheltered in various situations (a conservative neighborhood full of denial, a liberal college campus where it seems like racism is stupid and from the past).

Something that out in the open doesn't happen in the US anymore, for instance - but like I said, everything now is done "undercover".
