Anytime you post a backlink that is intended to manipulate PageRank or a site's ranking in Google search results, you risk getting penalized by Google as these may be considered part of a link scheme and a violation of Google’s Webmaster Guidelines

According to Google, the following are examples of link schemes which can result in penalties.

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank, i.e. paying for links, or posts that contain links; sending someone a product to review so they will link back to your site; basically any link that is not editorially given by the site owner, including blog comments.

Excessive link exchanges

Large-scale article marketing or guest posting campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links

Using (blackhat) automated software to create backlinks to your site.

Google favors editorial links; where a site owner willingly links to another site or page because they truly like it and want to share with their own readers. These editorial backlinks are rare and highly valuable to the webmaster.

The best way to get editorial backlinks is by publishing high quality content others will want to link to, including link bait such as check, tutorials and infographics.

No, I've always tried to build links the organic way. It takes a lot of effort to get out of Google's Sandbox, or so I've heard.

I do not like to build backlinks using illegal techniques. I do not want my website to get penalized by Google.

Nope, don't buy or sell links at all.

Nope don't exchange links excessively (I affiliate with lots of other sites, but I do so because I like them, Google be damned).

I don't really use article marketing campaigns and guest bloggers.

And I stay miles and miles away from any blackhat tricks or software.

So no, I'm not guilty of any link schemes.

When I do link building, I think of three things mainly, quality of the website, relevancy and my overall link profile should be natural to get maximum benefit.
