Everton have confirmed that Mikel Arteta will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his cruciate knee ligament.

Arteta was injured during the opening minutes of Everton's 0-0 draw with Newcastle at St James' Park on Sunday.

Manager David Moyes feared the worst immediately after the match and now the club have confirmed that the Spanish midfielder will require surgery and is facing up to six months on the sidelines.

What do you make of this? Can Everton who have found great form despite their currently casualty list afford to lose a player of Arteta's class?

Discuss.

I actually quite like Everton so it's a shame to see Arteta out.

It will give Everton less creativity in midfield and they won't be considered as dangerous from free kicks IMO.

Surprised he's never got a call up for Spain, I wouldn't mind him becoming an England international next January either 🙂

Biggest miss of the season, it is like Gerrard getting injured for Liverpool or Ronaldo for United.

We will really miss him, he pulls the strings in midfield and creates a lot of chances. Massive blow for us.

Someone said it was worse than 'Eduardo's' injury.
Wonder how Everton can cope.

It is not worse than Eduardos, his career nearly ended if the medical staff were any later onto the pitch.

Artetas injury is similar to Jimmy Bullards.
