If you affiliate with other similar or related sites, you can get quality target traffic. Volume is good, but only if it is target traffic. You want visitors who are looking for what you are offering. Ten visitors from a quality link source may give you 8 who join. This is far better than getting 100 visitors of unqualified traffic with few or none who join. Another positive to some people is that affiliate with sites with a higher Google page rank than your site may help to increase your sites rank.

If you affiliate with unrelated sites can lower your rank page. When Google sees you affiliate with sites totally unrelated to your subject, it can actually lower the value of your site in search results. Too many affiliate with unrelated sites also lowers your credibility with users. If you are simply looking at increasing your numbers without paying attention to what kind of members you are attracting, you may end up with lots of users who don't have any interest in the success of your site.

Hmmm...I never really thought of this, but now that I think about it, it does make sense. For those sites out there that are already pretty SEO'd out, I dont think this would matter much. Probably matter more for the smaller sites. I wonder how confused Google gets with all the "random" links to FP -D-

good advice. Its like opening up a pizza parlour and selling bags of cement in the corner of your store and wondering why no one is buying them. You have to sell (or offer/link to) things that appeal to your user base. Google hates sites that try and push unrelated things because the web thrives on being able to link one related resource to another.
