Is there a guide for beginners that want to build a stand alone forum that isn't sponsored or anything? What are some of the best web hosting sites for this?

Free:
ProBoards
Forumotion
IcyBoards
MyBB

Paid:
IPS
XenForo

^^ Those are my favorite forum softwares except "MyBB" not a huge fan of that software anymore.
Best web hosting, Godaddy, Blazingfast.

I want to pay for the best services. Also this forum I want to create will be paired with a game i want to create. Which means I would also like the forum to track a user's progress, performances, and achievements unlocked through the game. The stats of players' accounts in the game can also be seen on their forum profiles.

Are any of those websites capable of providing that sort of assistance for me?

If you'd like to track user's progress and performances and such u'll probably need to get a custom plugin made for that and I know who can create those type of plugins, MyBB would be the software to go for if I were you but if you looking to spend a little money then I'd go for XenForo forum.

That's great news to hear. Ummm..what..else.. oh yeah, say I do use Xenforo for a while but then something happens and the services gets shut down. Would I be able to safely transfer all my forum data such as, layout, themes, post, profile, etc. to another hosting site?

Yes just make sure you take backups of you're database frequently and themes, plugins etc.

@Aoki: GoDaddy is terrible for forum hosting, just saying.

We started ours out on GoDaddy and ran into issues almost immediately. Our intention was to start the site there to see if it was successful. First issue was slow server and people not being able to reach us. The next? Avast blocked our server IP because GoDaddy was hosting several malicious sites on the same shared server. I appealed to Avast and they unblocked the IP and blocked the individual web addresses. We got off GoDaddy as quickly as we could. lol. Don't do it.

Sometimes the hosting company might not be to blame. Forums might take up a lot of resources and if the owner doesn't want to pay extra then the forum suffers.

@Jason76: In this case it was the hosting company's fault. There were so many illegitimate sites on that shared server that we got blocked by Avast. GoDaddy clearly doesn't bother to monitor the kind of behaviour that happens on it's servers. The people at Avast actually advised us to get off that server fast. It was a very small forum at the time, and the GoDaddy was supposed to be a temporary solution anyway. Didn't expect it to be THAT bad.

We have moved to another host. It is x 100 times better. Probably outgrowing it now though since our forum is very active for it's size, but we're not afraid to upgrade as we need to. Will probably involve a move to a dedicated server this time though. Getting blocked by Avast was just ridiculous lol.

How can illegitimate sites hurt another website on a shared server? Can they hurt one on a VPS? Note, it is still somewhat shared.

@Jason76: Not trying to be funny, but did you miss the part where I said that the server's IP was blocked by Avast? While I spoke to Avast and they agreed to lift the IP ban and instead ban each of those sites individually. We were blocked for a time, not sure how many days, and we wouldn't have known if it wasn't for members telling us on Facebook.

This meant that every member or potential member that ran Avast on their computer got a "warning malicious site" alert when they attempted to open a link to our site. This is VERY damaging to a website.
