I'm making a blog for the RPG Maker game I'm working on. The game is non-commercial because of the sprites and mini-game scripts. I also planned on adding a separate section to my blog for images of my characters. These images would be okay for commercial use.

Therefore I wanted to know if it would be to have ads in the image section? I been reading over the commercial/non-commercial stuff and I'm a little confused. I don't want profit. I just want to help pay for the blog. My friend was kind enough to allow me to make a blog on his servers and I would like to make some money to give back to him.

Non commercial sites can make money, but their primary reason for existing is not that. I think it can be a fine line, but basically having some affiliate advertising does not make a site commercial. Blog could be considered non commercial IMO. Even though there is advertising, it is in addition to the content and the reason this forum (fP) is here and is being visited is primarily the exchange of information.

This is why I was confused, everything seems like a huge grey area, but I think I know what you mean.

isn't reddit both commercial and noncommercial for instance?
Yeah they are to. Aren't they?

OR how about places like Digital Point, The Admin Zone, or even support forums that offer hosting? All these offer paid services but even if you're not a customer or client, there's still plenty of sections a person can post in that have nothing to do with the primary focus on the forum. Bottom line is that quite frankly, forums can be commercial as well as noncommercial. there's plenty of sites that prove this.
