Can you get a large amount of traffic "quickly" by just writing articles or putting content like videos, and images on your website?
Is self-advertising, self-marketing/promotion, and telling people about your website a important part of quickly getting traffic.
I guest if your readers are nice enough to social bookmark or tell people about your website you can get more traffic by just writing content, but I feel a low percentage of readers actually social bookmark or promote your site since they have their own websites to promote.
I notice websites where I just write content on and do almost no promotion like "commenting on blogs, social bookmarking, etc" I get very few visitors according to my Google Analytics stats.
But, websites which I do a lot of promotion on via twittering, blog commenting, social bookmarking, social media marketing, article marketing, Youtube videos with my link on the video intro and outro, description area, channel, and blog and forum directory submissions. I get a lot more traffic and higher search rankings. I get about 300-400 visits per day according to Google Analytics.
