I'm heading to my first class of college right now. It starts in 40 minutes.
Is college worth it in your eyes?
For me, it's a tricky question. When does the cost of college become too much? My college costs around $250,000+ for 4 years if you include food and housing.

Since my college has a high success rate for alumni, it's reasonable to say that $250k is worth it. But that's my opinion. What do all of you think is an appropriate price for a college education? Do you think college is worth it at all?

College is only going to cost me $40000 for 4 years, so for me it certainly feels worth it. I see it as an investment in my future, a very important one.

It completely depends on what you want to do, how much you'll be making post graduation and later in life and whether sitting in class for hours each day is right for you. There certainly are alternatives, but it's not a coincidence that college is the most chosen route for high school grads.

$250,000 for a degree sounds a bit high, I'm assuming it's at a private school though and that's certainly normal.

Personally, I'm convinced that a college education is more than just about getting classroom knowledge. You get a lot more experience outside the classroom as well, while also on a college campus. You could arguably get the same experience and fulfillment without the high price tag of tuition and room/board, but I'm not fully convinced of that.

College is a chance to find yourself and figure out who you are and what you want to do - most college students don't know what they're going to do or will change their minds when they enter college freshman year. Without going to college, you're forced to enter the workforce immediately and you don't have that opportunity of freedom and almost an "excuse" to not work full time and to take some time for yourself (in addition to going to class).

But, I'm rambling. I'm a big advocate for a college education, as you can see, and if I wasn't, I wouldn't be at college myself. I've thought about quitting myself at times, thinking it's not worth it, but in the end it really is. You ultimately need a college degree to do anything desirable (unless you're happy in something like construction for the rest of your life). But even that will often require a degree if you ever want a promotion into management.

Still rambling... Okay, I'm done. 😛

Hahaha nice ramble bro!
Yeah I'm studying computer science. They expect the amount of jobs to outnumber the amount of qualified people for the next 20 years. I'm fortunate enough to not have to pay for my education but I think I'd make enough to justify the $250k if I had to pay it.

See what I did there? I copied 'cat' a lot of times to show you what you've done. You've copy catted me.
Computer science FTW though

I'm paying absolutely nothing from my first year until my master's. So, yes, it's worth it.

Scholarship? If so congrats!
My parents are paying for it all so I can't really say I'm financially stable (personally).

Scholarships, grants, Rehabilitation services for my ADHD, AmeriCorps, etc. And thank you!

Go to the military
Can you explain why this is a good idea?
Personally, it isn't a good idea for me. The college fund wouldn't cover the college education that I currently have. So for me, the military would provide 4 years of risks and less of a reward than my parents are currently providing.

Sure...If you want to be a teacher, lawyer or doctor or something..

..Not if you want to be a chef or janitor, though. 😛

I think it's always worth it, but it's not always necessary for success. In other words, even someone with a useless degree, job-wise, has learned a lot in school. However, a person who has never gone might end up in some career making a crap load more than some philosophy major, for instance.

Anyway, a philosophy major etc.., can make a lot of money despite the major, if they go the extra mile while in school and/or after - like make their own blog around the subject and run ads etc..
