I've been hosting killboards for EVE online since 2005 - 2008
absolutely free of charge, AD free, 100% uptime, blablabla.
When i started hosting, I found it rather difficult to get customers. But once i got ONE customer, I did everything i could to keep him happy, And satisfied he was. More and more customers kept coming like bees on honey. After a few months i had to upgrade my hosting account because i exceeded bandwidth. At that time i decided to place ad zones on every board i was hosting, And still keep it a free service. With the money i got from ads, I could easily purchase another server.
My piece of advice is, Don't give up, Just do it. After a while you will discover it was bad idea, Or you'll be swimming in money.
Either way, You learn by doing.
I've had staff positions on Hosting Sites before...
They never ended well, and often had me picking up some garbage, and having to drag it along with me at times. I will never become a Staff Member on an unofficial hosting site ever again.
But if you do try to make the endeavor, darth maul. I wish you a huge amount of luck. I've been on probably 30-35 Unofficial Hosting Boards, and Staffed 5 I think. Not one of them ever succeeded, and all ended up collapsing on themselves. And while I can't say this for all of them, a few of the Owners were quite clever and had a strong tie in leadership.
