Do you think it's a good idea to allow forum members to moderate the forum on your behalf, even if they don't have an official title? Could this be a good way to extend your staff, even when official staff is not present on site? Or, could this lead to trolling and beligerant behavior? What's your experience?

This can be quite a good idea when you are going to be away, I think. But if you're not going to be away for too long, I prefer not to do it. Just worried that there will be power abuse and we may miss some posts/important points in case something happens. Backup is a good idea, just a matter of how we design it as careful as possible.

I agree with this. I think I only ever had it happen once where I allowed one of my members to manage the forum. I was the only one on staff at the time and I had to be away for an operation. So after some scouting around I finally managed to PM someone to see if he'd be willing to take over for me till I started recovering and feeling better to the point where I can go back to work on the site. If you're desperate as I was at the time, this can be a good thing. In fact, if I recall correctly, this person did such a good job that I ended up keeping him on staff permanently after that.

I have undercover moderators that are real members and don't have much moderator permissions, but they do help out every now and then. Like locking threads, etc. when they need to be locked, they just don't say that they were the ones that did it. 😛

I have had members moderate certain forums if they are active enough in that board, just to take some duties off the main moderator team. They can only sticky, lock, and soft delete but it does help when they are the main active people in that forum.

Having Moderators and your members as moderators can be a good thing especially for larger forums, or in times where your unable to be online alot. As an owner you should focus on building your community and moderating it but If you spend alot of time moderating and no time building then your forums will never grow or grow very slowly.

Depends if the member is proven as an upstanding community member and doesn't have any bad reputation. I like the idea of @LunarSouls though in my case (on what I plan) it isn't undercoverish since it is listed on my help doc section that members 'might' be rewarded for proven track record of correctly reporting offending members.

I did in the past. I would promote people on my old anime forum before it went belly up to moderate when I had much going on.

There is a group which don't have the official mod title, but they possess some moderation abilities to help out the global mods/admins from time to time. They also have a color and a rank.

I saw it happen at Unity Answers, where you become a moderator when you reach 1000 Karma points for helping the community. It works though personally I wouldn't allow my users to even lock or delete there own posts 😛
