If you noticed your members stopped returning. Do you send emails to try and encourage them to come back?

Nope, I do not see the point as most do not subscribe the emailing list and also most go into the spam folder.. It's wasting resources for not getting it out there

How is it wasting resources? Even if not all emails are received. There's still members that will see it, especially if you have a large user base. Maybe some members forgot about your site?

I currently don't. I'll send an alert, or a push if they have it enabled. Unless you default emails to on (which I'm not sure how that would fair with GDPR), which I have defaulted off.

I only can send 150 a month anyway.. via SendGrid

I have been known to send emails to members to entice them to come back but I can't say that I have done it recently but it can have a mixed reaction when you do it.

I find having it set up to send a weekly update email to members who opt-in works better to bring people back if you can do that.

I used to years ago when I first started running forums, but I found it never really worked out in my favor and people still didn't return. As I got more experience, I never really tried it because I never had success with it in the past. I think maybe if it hadn't ended up being one extra task in the running of the site largely on my own in my last run in running a site, I might've given it a try to see how it worked out in my favor, but I always ended up feeling like bringing life into the site and trying to fix all the problems was a little more important at the time than bringing old members back, nice as that would've been.

I don't think it necessarily achieves much by emailing members. If there had been significant updates/upgrades to a site then yes I might consider emailing everyone, but outside of that I don't think there would be much benefit?

I do but only maybe once or twice a year at most.

I don't push it with e-mails because I don't think members would like constantly being e-mailed so I limit it to only once or twice a year when neccasary. Overall it doesn't make a difference. A few lurkers come back, have a look around then dissappear again, but in the long run it's pretty futile, especially as some do change e-mail addresses.

Only once this year so far have I done an "Accounts and activity" e-mail and a reminder for members to check their spam folders if they have trouble logging in. This year it has actually brought back an original 2002 (When we opened) member (Who I think stopped coming due to personal health reasons) and helped us greatly during the being of the message board especially with the roleplay section.

Overall though that's a single case and usually it does not have much benefit.

I just did that on my old Mighty No. 9 fan forum, but it's because I just reopened it. (Which I do plan on sharing the link here soon!) No one seemed to log back in though, to be fair the forum hasn't been online since 2016. I have also done this with Thee Zone in the past, but no one logged in after sending the email. I do have activity on the forum though! I also did this for a Teen Titans forum but I also linked the discord server and that brought a few members to the Discord server but not on the forum. :\

I think this strategy for returning back for the inactive users on a site is not a guaranteed one. Only a few would take the heed and come back.

For me, if I didn't have you bookmarked to begin with or remember the site the likelihood that I'll pop in isn't very likely. I may browse the site again to remember what it was but more likely is I'll delete the email.

I don't do it because I don't like it when a forum emails me unless it's a happy birthday email.

That's that. Sending emails to members to return might end up pissing some of them off. What's better is to keep the forum active, lively and engaging. Users will likely come around once the vibes align.

I used to email in the past but when they did not come back even when I started sending emails, I stopped sending emails

I send out an activity summary email to inactive users who haven’t logged in for a while. I think it works best and encourages users to return.

Email marketing is a very strong and often underestimated value that definitely needs to be done frequently.

I typically reserve email messages for important announcements.

I use the PM and alert system more than anything.

I do have default settings set to email on PM and alerts. So, my hopes are that they get it that way.

I don't like a bunch of email myself so I can't force that on my membership.

I used not to do it, but I am starting to send emails when I feel it's something worthy to say, but as short as possible.

I mean, email it's a tool of communication. I believe it's important to use it to keep the community
informed. If they don't read it, there is nothing else I can do, but at least I did my job to transmit the message to them.
