My dream would be to have a successful website that pays for itself. I don't even want to make a profit, I just want it to cover the hosting and forum software costs. So my question is do you make money off your forum?

Nope, When I started I was not in it for making money anyway as a hobby. The amount that you may get from adverts doesn't even pay for a year's worth of your hosting costs ;P

My adverts are done via Google and created back in Australia and since then as I left the country and no longer have a bank account over there the money in that account is lost 🙁

I don't think I have ever successfully brought in any money from a website....or at least a forum. I ran a posting service way back in the day that people would pay me for but that's about it.

Nope, I don't do forums for money, so while I've earned a little from "sponsors," I've never once earned enough to cover a month's hosting.

I run my forum as a hobby, not for money. I was just hoping to one day cover the costs of running the website. If it never covers the cost that's ok too,.

Nope I don't make any money off my forums. I run them all as a hobby. It would be cool if I did earn some cash at some point, but I think it's hard to earn money on a forum unless you offer something unique.

I have been on writing sites that pay for several years and have earned quite a bit. As of now I am paying more attention Indexforum and quite like that Site.

We have made some money on Revillution through Adsense and also user upgrades that members have paid for in the past but it is only small.

The hope is to one day be able to earn enough to pay for the hosting and domain name 🙂

I’d recommend running adsense ads to see how it performs. I’ve been planning to do this soon as well. Having some type of revenue to cover the costs is always a good idea if you want to go that route.

When I was younger I made some money off forums, but it was always one-off. For example, selling a VIP membership, or selling an ad slot, or selling the forum itself. I never got to a point with any of my forums where I made a consistent monthly amount. That was always the goal but my online priorities shifted too much, my real life got in the way, and by the time I had the time & energy to think about making a forum for profit, I had moved into other areas of tech. Long story short - I think I know how a forum community can be profitable but I don't know if I'll ever have the time to test my theories and commit to it. I've seen so many cool money making methods work in the past and there are still forums today that make thousands per month, but they are longtime sites with many members.

I think that if you try hard enough, you will reach your desired goal, it is not too unattainable. But you should consider that to reach this point, you need to invest a few years in your website.

For me l am planning to own a forum and monetize on it after a couple of years working on building the fan base and doing very vivid promotion and marketing for that matter.

My forums are monetized, I do not make a lot of money but I do make enough to pay for the domain and hosting
