Some might want a fancy extension. In fact, .host can be gotten for around 50 cents, but the renewal is, hold your breath, :dead: around 70 dollars a year! However, some might pay it to seem first-class. On the other hand, you can get a .win domain and it can be around 5.50 for 5 years.

Well, I don't favor extremes and I might want a .us cause I like them, but I know the renewals are a little expensive, but nothing like .host, and sadly I saw a .host one I really liked.

I don't overly like a lot of the new extensions...

For example:
.condos
.parts
.credit
.tennis
.accountant
.pizza

They're overly specific and so, in many cases, only lend themselves to a few really specific cases. Suppose I was running a credit card company then maybe good.creditcard makes sense... But that kinda poses the question of would I really want to use good.credit or good.creditcard for my url? Especially when I wouldn't be surprised if most people are more likely to remember goodcard.com than good.credit. (I mean good.credit looks like something a spammer would use.)

And it's not like domain providers can (or should for that matter) enforce use of top level domains for things. (About the only restriction I agree with is for country code domains you should have an address in that country.) So that means they can't really force pizza places to only use the .pizza extension. Sure <generic large pizza chain name>.pizza makes sense but they're still more likely to just use the .com url instead (since it's quicker and easier for most people). And even if they did use the <name>.pizza they're not going to let go of their <name>.com url either. Nor should they be forced to since it kinda is connected to their brand. And I could see a few issues if they were suddenly forced to let go of them. (Like people getting these high traffic .com urls to put spam/ads on.)

Plus the costs of these are all over the place even for the initial year. Some of them are like 3.00 a year (ex- .football) others are over 200 a year (ex- .game).

In short, yes I think that the domain extension does matter a lot and that the traditional ones are the best options to go with.

I have seen some successful weird extension applications like ForumWeb.Hosting, though. That site gets a crap load of traffic.

I think because it's an EMD "forum web hosting" and many people tend to search this phrase on Google search.
