I wouldn't spend money on advertising if you don't have enough. You should only spend money on advertising if you're making money from your website. You use the free methods to build up your reputation and then you can balance with paid methods. If you spend money on advertising you could go broke quickly if you don't know what you're doing.

This is very true, you also want to make sure whatever advertising route you take has a good return on investment like Cost Per Action vs Cost per Mil

I feel like money spent on advertising is one of the best ways to get a return on investment.

How else would you invest if you're not spending on advertising?

Google "guerilla marketing" and "guerilla advertising" and apply it to your forum without spending money.

Most advertising ways are free, so yes, don't spend money!

One can spend no money to advertise, but at the same time, not allot of forums can get to be big, without some sort of investment via actual money. I know that there are forums that have gained allot of members without having to pay to do it, but even then, how can one mange to get that far without having to put in allot of effort, without atleast a little bit of an investment?

There are many free ways, so don't go out of your way to use paid methods. Try the free ones first, and see how it goes. If it's no good, then use some paid means of advertising. Don't spend to much though, there is a limit. xD

If I could find advertising that would actually product results, I would not mind spending money on it. But, really I know so many different ways to get free advertising, I don't have a need for paid ads.

Time is money though 😀

If you can get free ads but it takes 30 minutes of worth, but your time is worth $20 an hour, you'd be willing to pay $8 for the ad 😀

It's true that you can go broke quickly when buying advertising with a small budget, but that's a risk that needs to be taken when trying to start a business. Spend money to make money.

That is really great information. This is very important. To keep your self alive in this competition you need loads of traffic along with good user experience on your site. Try to use retargeting as much as you can for your specific niche. Facebook ads now let you do this.

What is retargeting for advertising? I never heard that term before.

I feel like a mix of both works best. Put a bit of money into advertising, while you still remain to do the free method on the side.

Wait until you get a decent amount of traffic AND have your site developed completely (e.g. no "work in progress" pages) before using any paid advertising. I would also do extensive research on the type of advertising you are looking at and what people are getting out of it.

Advertise smartly. Do a bit of FB promotion, work hard on twitter, put a tenner here and a tenner there into a few ads & see how they go. Taking risks with 100s of pounds in online advertising is foolishness, as your money can very well just disappear.
