Dormancy of HDD is 2 years

Is this correct that the hard disk has a dormancy period of 2 years? It means that a hard disk that is not accessed for 2 years may be expired with the contents corrupted. I had read it in a post in social media that we should access the external hard disk at least once a year to avoid being dormant for 2 years.
 
HDD can last allot longer then that. Put another 8 years on top of your two years
 
I won't agree to this as I have a couple of 500GB SATA drives from my old machine and I usually use them as an external backups.
