This is what NeoThermic put on phpbb.com

Hello,

Today we are announcing our retirement plans for phpBB 2.0.x. This is advanced notification so that everyone can stay informed.

Commencing Wednesday 1st October 2008, phpBB 2.0.x download links will be removed from the download page at phpBB.com. Anyone wishing to obtain phpBB 2.0.x can continue to obtain the 2.0.x package at sourceforge.net.

Commencing Thursday 1st January 2009, phpBB 2.0.x will be formally retired, and support will no longer be actively provided for 2.0.x. Converting from 2.0.x to 3.0.x will continue to be supported.

Security patches, if required, will be provided until Sunday 1st February 2009.

The reason for the early retirement is the PHP Group's decision to retire PHP 4. phpBB 2.0 mainly runs on the PHP 4 codebase and it would be unwise to require people to have an unsupported version of PHP installed in order to use phpBB.

Teams will announce how they will handle the retirement in the coming days.

And wGEric has posted how it works for the mods

Below is the schedule of the process that will take place to retire the phpBB2 modifications section of this site.

On July 1, 2008 MODs for phpBB2 will no longer be accepted into the MOD Database. Updates to phpBB2 MODs that fix security issues will continue to be accepted. [2.0.x] MOD Writers Discussion and [2.0.x] MOD Requests forums will be set to read only. [2.0.x] MODs in Development will be changed to not allow new topics but replying to existing topics will still be allowed. [2.0.x] MOD Database Releases forum will not change and will continue to operate the same way it has been.

February 1, 2009 all submissions of phpBB2 MODs will no longer be accepted into the MOD Database. [2.0.x] MODs in Development and [2.0.x] MOD Database Releases will be switched to read only.

May 1, 2009 all of the forums will be closed and hidden from public view. All downloads for phpBB2 MODs will be removed from this site.

Authors wishing to port their MODs to phpBB3 may use the 3.0 Modifications forums to receive assistance.

Yeah, I noticed this the last time I visited phpBB.com. But, it doesn't really affect me since I'm running phpBB3. 🙂

Plus, they're giving phpBB2 users a long time (2009) to switch to phpBB3, so I'm sure it isn't going to create that much of a problem.

My forum will be switching to phpBB3 in the very near future 🙂

PhpBB3 appears to be much better and alot more advanced.

It is, especially the permissions system. It also has a really nice feel to it.

I did quite like phpBB2 but i think it is time to let it rest as it has had it's time and it does have a bad reputation because of the issues where as phpBB3 is more inline with other forum software and is safer with a much better reputation and most people have/are transferring so even if there wasn't this announcement i suspect most phpBB2 forums would have been upgraded anyway come 2009.

They might have another beta by the time 2.x.x retires maybe.... possibly.... -lol-

It has been about 4 months since the last beta -roll-
