Don't be a retard. Of course you still have to advertise and stuff, but there are no guarantees that it will become active. It's pure luck.
No it's not pure luck. It's all about dedication and getting people to the site. It's not just "luck". Obviously someone has never run a forum here 😛

I have run two successful forums, one which gained over 100,000 posts in it's first month and now has over 500,000 posts.

And another which has 40,000 posts.

I obviously know what i am talking about when it comes to running a forum.
Links please. The only thing I see in your signature is a site that's been around for over a year with only 8k posts.
And also the fact that he merged Toups' graphics forum with his about a month ago.

In my opinion, there's no such thing as luck. Whatever happens, happens. It takes a lot of effort, time, and dedication into getting your forum active. Your forum is most likely not going to get active over night, but it's still a possibility. It all depends on what your forum is based on. If it's based on Barbies, and you decided to visit a Barbie chat room and post the link to your Barbie forum, many people could find your forum quite interesting and join it, simply because it relates to what they are interested in: Barbies. I created a forum for OMGPOP.com many months ago, and I decided to just give it up because I couldn't handle multiple forums. However, I check in on it every now and then, and I see that there's new registered members and new posts, and the forum's not even active. The reason why I keep getting visits and posts is because the link is still in my profile, and there are many people who view other peoples' profiles on OMGPOP to challenge them in games and stuff. If you know where to advertise at, then you're set... you just need to continue advertising their regularly.

http://www.moviediscussions.net/forums/index.php & www.cloverfieldmovieforums.com

I don't own the one in my sig, it's just an ad.

I've been on both of those sites in their infancy. When moviediscussions was made I was a mod on tv discussions way long ago... movie discussions came together from luck and promotoing. I remember all the offers you had to make posts on that site that were on TAZ and were on here. So it's not like you did nothing to get that site up.

And the cloverfield one came about because of hard work and dedication. I've seen that site in its infancy too. Your argument that a site gets popular just from luck is ridiculous. I know for a fact that both of those sites were heavily promoted and did exchanges, etc.

Agreed, luck is nothing... just a word. Does nothing.

Movie Discussions only ever did a few exchanges when it was young. Cloverfield Movie Forums barley did any, probably less than five.

I have been running forums for 5 years, and none of them ever had any success, BUT, i always did the same things with my forums, and then suddenly CMF became active and after that Movie Discussions?

That's luck. If it wasn't luck, all of my other forums should have been active as well.

There's no such thing as luck, bro. It's called working. You don't wait around on your butt all day and rely on luck to give you members and posts. You have to work for it.

Yes but it did exchanges. I recall doing numerous exchanges on movie discussions from admin zone and I believe it was in the launch team area as well.. i used to be a mod at TAZ..

Furthermore you said that some of your forums failed and others did, could that be because you had more people to start with on others? Could it be because it had more interesting subjects? Could it be that the themes were more attractive?
