Forum discussions get stronger when people back up what they say, but most users don’t bother. Have you found ways to nudge members into sharing links, screenshots, or examples without making the environment feel too academic or strict?

I don't really force my users to share sources whenever they post. Sure having sources is good, but I don't think it's necessary.

I think it depends on the context. Is it just casual discussion about a TV show/song/movie/game/other similar topic or is it something more in depth like a debate on who the next US president should be? If it's the former, screenshots or links to the content would be great, but I don't think they're overly necessary; they'll just enhance the conversation if added. If it's the latter, I think sharing sources would be beneficial. It would help with providing context to the conversation at hand and would further enhance the conversation by letting those replying read the source(s) and provide their own insight on it.

If you can suggest it in a friendly manner, sure.

Otherwise, members who get annoyed when you try to tell them how to post on a forum. I remember back in the day admins taking moderation actions against members who didn't use SEO practices in their content. Soon enough, as expected, their forum died from inactivity because no one wants chores on a forum.

Not citing a source can be annoying.

Instead of forcing it, lead by example. Reply to them and challenge them but cite a source to see if they follow suit. Just do so in a friendly manner.
