Promoting your website on Facebook is still the best option to get traffic. But it is easier said than done. You need to have a dynamic account, not just active but dynamic which means you have been interacting with your friends. A thousand friends who know you very well will more likely react to your posts especially if you are creative in your promotional post.

I do agree that if the owner of a page has a connection with most of the followers in one way or another, the posts are more likey to get more clicks and reactions than if it was just a page with followers that dont know who the owner is. 😛 That said, if the updates on your page a of good quality and the links linked to in it are of the same quality, it will do well to. 😛

I agree that Facebook is a good medium for webmasters to promote their forums, I know amongst certain niches, drawing attention from like-minded people can certainly help.

Does anybody have experience with the paid Ads on the platform though, as it didn't seem very useful for me

It's indeed a fact and very evident actually that Facebook holds the crown to everything online. So it would be a no-no for you not to sell or advertise your products or business on Facebook.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I could go from a new Facebook account to a larger gathering of friends etc? I don't currently have a Facebook account at all I have never had a desire to make one but many recent suggestions while looking into how to better populate my forum has convinced me to try.

You should note, though, that only 0.5 to 3 percent of non-boosted posts reach an audience (even on your own group or page). In that case, paying is needed for anyone serious.

I remember it's about 10% since 3,4 years ago, but now it's less than 5% reaches on the total fans.

Its obvious Facebook does this in order to encourage its users to use their paid ads service. It has become more of a business than a social networking site.

But that's business, can you blame them?

I doubt being a business was their intention when they first came out.

Agree with you that facebook is the best option to get traffic, provided that you use paid service. Also, presently instagram and Pinterest are also best to increase your reach among people.

No, it was. It's just Mark Zuckerberg misplace his feelings on how business should be conducted on Facebook. Monetizing from integrated ads (their own profiles/posts/content, etc.) is a genius business model, but the problem is, they [Zuckerberg included] don't understand that in order for more money to flow in, you need to encourage your advertisers to do more, which would mean that you need to give your advertisers more percentage of the retention users. Otherwise you'll have another MySpace. Twitter is currently feeling the effects of MySpace, but Facebook has a long way before it feels the same revolt.

Twitter needs to fix it immediately, but Facebook has time to really fix the issues.
