The number of Facebook's UK users dropped by 600,000 in December, according to data by social media monitoring firm SocialBakers.

Though representing a typical seasonal dip in use over the Christmas period, the UK was the only one of Facebook's 10 busiest territories that saw a seasonal fall, with user numbers dropping 1.86%.

This is kind of interesting to read because we see that Facebook has reached a billion users, but with that comes a bad part, it is just everywhere and it is hard to maintain a steady flow of new accounts when FB is EVERYWHERE. Just like what the article said, over saturation.

I am not surprised, the things people write on facebook is stale, there are better ways of talking to people now.

This is good news for me! Building a social network this year.

I have to admit that I'm surprised by that and would have expected them to gain members, not lose them. I wonder what sites those who stopped using FaceBook are now using for their social connections.

Many people saw FaceBook as a threat to forums, if FaceBook starts losing members, perhaps that is an opportunity for forums.

If you don't like what someone is adding to FaceBook, you can stop their notifications from appearing to you. You really only have to look at content that interests you?

What do you have in mind?

This doesent suprise me the future is about just writting posts I see there will be more real time and streaming services.

oh BOOHOO
too many people are so obsessed with it its not a bad thing
like to most teens you can literally say''get a life'' because what do they do? check their FB page etc like every half hour or worse
like seriously.....

i know its their choice ''to do that'' not saying they can't do it
in my opinion it's just sad it takes some people lives like literaly over
they care more about the freaking fb then their homework = important
there are much worse things though, not just teens lol

I mean that what other people talk about doesn't make me want to join in their conversation, unlike with twitter the short burst tweets tend to be much easier to be able to relate too.

I wonder how many of the accounts are spammer accounts since I read a lot of spammers use Facebook to spam their links.

Some people might also be closing their inactive Facebook account, and just use one insread of 2 or more FB accounts.

I read that Facebook also been doing a better job at deactivating dead members who are no longer living, and deleting spammer, fake, pet facebook pages, troll accounts, and accounts which are violating their terms of service.

I think people are on Pinterest, Myspace, Instagram, Reddit, Keek, Google+, Tumblr, Linkedin, Twitter and other niche/sub-category social network which are designed for people who like certain things.

http://new.myspace.com relaunch today, and I bet it will take even more users from all social networks since the old design has been replace by a clean, and modern design.

It might not be their fall though. I don't see new social networking site thats coming yet

Facebook is not catered to a certain user, unlike the other social networks, I think thats why they are losing members.

Maybe it could be to do with New Years resolutions?

Yes all the addicts saying they will cancel their account to have more of a real life?

I remember the time when people thought Facebook would win over forums. It seemed like everytime someone would come out with a forum, people would say, "There's no way you'll ever succeed because Facebook is ten times more popular than any forum out there!" Well, for forum owners who've been struggling to get their sites off the ground, as Fergal has said, this could be the year when a person's forum could finally achieve success after all!

You can't combine a forum and a social networking site - they are two completely different things. Either way you can't compare to niche websites, they all do their own purpose.

Now this little setback will not make Facebook go out of business, but I do agree that Facebook is losing its flashiness and fast and I think a website that can add new interesting things into their social network will be the winner. Then again in another thread I posted that it is hard to start a new social network, no matter how flashy it is, without your friends.

That is the problem that Google+ and MySpace right now are having.

I wasn't saying it wasn't possible. I was just bringing up an example of some criticsm that I've read from other people, especially those of us into general discussion forums and whatever.

I agree, I think many websites like Facebook might see a dip in traffic because of New Years resolutions not related to the internet like spend more time with friends, and family, find a job, exercise more, save money, etc which take time away from the internet.

But, when people forget about their resolutions, they might go back to their old internet habits.

there was an article recently saying that graffiti crime has dropped and it suggested it is because of the smartphones. just think what other areas of crime will drop in the near future because teens are so occupied and obsessed with social networks, playing games on the ipad etc. So maybe these new technology innovations and the fact that you can get these gadgets and devices very cheap off the internet now, maybe we will see a reduction in teenage crime.

That's a really interesting idea. Although, newer technology may also have the opposite effect and make organizing crime easier for younger people, and for them to come into contact with people who they usually wouldn't have and begin crime that way. Or maybe the crime has changed, so it's more of technology crime (like downloading illegal content).

Stores these days don't sell spray paint to underage kids because of new laws which stop the sale of spray paint to kids because of graffiti. Plus, I also heard a lot of schools are cutting back on Art class, so maybe more kids are not artistic enough to paint on walls.

I read a story which said some teens in the US use Cell phones and Twitter to organize flash robbings where a bunch of teens steal from stores thinking they won't get caught at the store because of the number of teens in the store robbing it.
