Forum Rules - A lot or a little?

I say that I'm not the only forum owner to break his own or her rules 😛 And on that note do I get in trouble - Nope, I just tell myself off without anyone knowing 😛 Just slap myself 😛

he's the boss 😀

You should tell yourself off in public so people know that you are sorry for breaking the rules!

Make an example of yourself!

That's long gone, Since then rules have changed as the site improves.

Anyway who said I did really broken my own rules 😛

For the most part, I prefer keeping a close eye on who joins, so I don't have to worry about a lot of rules. I've never even had to warn anyone.

Remember all that small print you read when you last signed up for a service? No, neither do I because nobody ever reads the small print and I'd argue it's the same for forum rules. My point being long or short they won't get read.

One of my forums had 'Rule 5' which stated the first member to read the rule and post that they have done so would receive a £100 Amazon gift voucher. It was never claimed.

Let's face it, people who need rules to keep their posts civil may not make the best members. I do have rules but their primary function is so that staff can moderate with consistency.

I typically like to keep my board rules to a minimum and focus on a lot of the misc. points that fall outside of "common sense and etiquette"

I always make the rules very lightweight and to the point. If there needs to be additional rules added from an incident, I’ll add that in - but I find it to be better off retroactive than proactive in this regard.

I like that, straight to to the point and no more Xd

I make rules small and simple, more than 50% wont even look at them anyway. This also helps moderators because most do it for free and they dont have to learn complex operating procedures, they can just use common sense when making a decision. Forums been around for so long most are pretty universal anyways.

Short and simple for sign ups, something longer in the ToS to cover any legal issues. Though I can't remember the last time I had to enforce rules on a member of my forum.

I do have some rules just to cover the basics. I want people to feel comfortable when they visit my forum so there has to be some basic rules to keep the peace.

I think the rules should be kept short and sweet for small communities starting out. Most people here are respectable. So you don't have a whole lot to worry about. You might get one member that doesn't play well with others.

People hate reading stuff like this so I try to limit it as much as possible and keep it simple.

If members are worried about something, they can always ask for clarification.

most do not even read anyway LOL

I would like to go simple, respect other members, don't post low value content, stay on the topic, and never copy from other sources.

I don't have too many rules on my forum, I feel like having too many may get too overwhelming for some people. My rules are generally treat all members with respect, don't post illegal stuff such as warez, try to keep posts on topic, and don't ask to be staff or backseat moderate.
