Well, looks like Google and reddit is entering a partnership & Reddit will be getting paid $60 million a year. While Google will be using reddit’s content for their AI’s service.

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Social media platform Reddit has struck a deal with Google (GOOGL.O), opens new tab to make its content available for training the search engine giant's artificial intelligence models, three people familiar with the matter said.
The contract with Alphabet-owned Google is worth about $60 million per year, according to one of the sources.
The deal underscores how Reddit, which is preparing for a high-profile stock market launch, is seeking to generate new revenue amid fierce competition for advertising dollars from the likes of TikTok and Meta Platform's (META.O), opens new tab Facebook.

This is big news for google and reddit, but what do you think about this latest news?

I'm not sure I want this. I'm considering deleting my reddit posts and account, but not 100% sure on that.

I think it's inevitable that AI will plunder everything that's available on the Internet. It does surprise me a little that Google is willing to pay, especially for content that it is so casual and random.

I won't ever sell my sites data for AI training. If they did, they'd be taking it without permission.

I agree. I wonder if its because they want to take a huge piece of Chatgpt’s marketshare and try to convince people to switch over to their Ai’s service. I also wonder how this will effect search.

I'm not an AI expert but I know enough to know that boat sailed long ago. Generative AI systems will harvest your data regardless of whether its copyrighted works or personal data hence the current class action lawsuits against Microsoft, Google and OpenAI.

Google's reply...

Google general counsel Halimah DeLaine Prado said the company has been "clear for years that we use data from public sources — like information published to the open web and public datasets – to train the AI models behind services like Google Translate, responsibly and in line with our AI Principles."
"American law supports using public information to create new beneficial uses, and we look forward to refuting these baseless claims," DeLaine Prado said.

More worrying, Google has been gobbling up our personal data for two decades and while they say they don't use it for training purposes you can guarantee that they will (assuming they don't already) to gain a competitive advantage. If you want to know more, read up on the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

It's for all the reasons above why most of my personal forums have always been by invitation only, hidden from guests, bots and scraping tools. it's also why I've never posted anything on any form of social media other than forums while hiding behind an alias.

@zappaDPJ AI is also wrecking havoc for a lot of artists because their work is being included in ai as well. Just like forum content.

Also, people are discrediting real artists now and claiming that they’re not real artists because “Ai does it better”.

Some artists are even worried that soon enough we won’t be able to tell whether something was made by Ai or a human.

Yep, my artist friends are infuriated by what's happening and most people don't even realize what AI is doing to the true creative industry.

The way that I interpret this is that Reddit is simply charging Google for what Google already crawls and reads. Google already can access everything public which is the majority of Reddit

Exactly! However, now Reddit’s content is starting to rank higher than any other website on google.
