Has anyone tried doing this? I started up my own station, and hopefully I can have it running 24/7 someday. I only have a few songs on my list. For those who don't know how I'm setup:

1) I create a playlist of songs on WinAmp with an edcast plugin
2) The music is sent from my computer to a server
3) The server distributes the music to listeners

Has anyone else tried accomplishing this? πŸ™‚

I'd actually love to do something like this, but doubt I'll ever have the time for it. What types of songs do you play?

For now, just dance music and hip-hop. I'm hoping to add a lot more songs to have a bigger variety, and hopefully I can have it run 24/7. πŸ˜€

It only takes a little bit of time, maybe half an hour to set up, and it was free for me. πŸ™‚

The lengthy part is finding all of the right songs to add to it. πŸ™‚

Are they only songs that you can use freely?

Not sure what you mean. I don't want to get into any copyright issues, so I'm still playing around with it. Users can't actually download the songs, but I guess there could still be some issues. I'm going to stay away from promoting it too much, just in case. πŸ™‚

What I meant was, are the songs playing mainstream songs. For example, Imagine Dragons, Sabaton, etc. I really wouldn't advise playing them unless you have permission to do so. As you said, you could get into a lot of copyright issues. Some artists welcome the opportunity to get free fans and publicity, it just depends.

There's also a site out there that has a bunch of free songs you can use, they just aren't from mainstream bands/artists.

Yeah, I used to be a "DJ" on an online station that, after I had left, I had found out they were using pirated songs and were not paying the artists for the use of the song.

Many songs are released under private use only, and broadcasting them can be against the law in some cases.

I would highly recommend looking this up before continuing on with any project that could get sticky πŸ˜›

I used to be a DJ in a real life radio station. According to what I know, singers are very happy to have their songs played by the station. In fact, they always send us a free copy of their latest songs. It's free promotion for them.

If you are not getting paid from ads or your not running ads on your channel you are fine to use the songs. How do i Know this, I also used to have online radio through shoutcast and I shared my channel on iTunes and iTunes does ask if you're getting paid or not if not you are ok with copyrights.

I didn't plan to make any profits from the website at all. It was just a hobby project of mine. πŸ™‚

I think I should be fine, but I'll do some research just to make sure. πŸ˜€

I did a bit of research into this. You need a license depending on the number of estimated listening hours for all listeners in a month. I think I found a place offering a basic package for $26 a month.
