How Do You Decide When to Warn, Mute, or Ban a User?

Not every violation is equal. How do you build judgment rules that feel fair across different cases? What helps avoid overreacting while still protecting community health?

I’d usually warn first, mute if behavior continues, and ban when someone is clearly harming the community or ignoring repeated chances. Context matters. And yes, I think many people catch themselves endlessly scrolling out of boredom sometimes the key is noticing it and being intentional about how you spend your time.

I ask my staff to leave their opinions at the forum door, read the forum rules and ensure they are applied consistently. If it's deemed necessary to ban a member, a very rare event on any of my forums, I ask to be consulted first.

Warning is usually a friendly reminder either in public or DM.

I don't typically mute people.

If they persist after a warning, it's time to ban and be done with it.

I usually give a warning first, unless it’s clear that a user needs to be banned right away.

I do what Bawse does, I will give them a warning first but if they keep breaking rules then I will ban them especially if they're breaking our more serious rules. If they're slightly getting off topic or out of hand a suspension is fine, but when they cross the line of harassing others or sharing things they shouldn't be sharing then they're gone.

You usually have to do something really terrible to warrant a ban. I rarely ban members, unless they purposely break rules or make the forum experience not enjoyable for others. I usually warn with a detailed explanation, sometimes I give multiple warnings. If warnings are not enough, I will usually impose restrictions on the user before banning them.

The people that usually receive an instant ban are trolls, people who join just to disregard the rules and mess around
