How do you get members to register on your forum?

Update the forum regularly with competitions, etc.. 😉

Have content (resources to download, or something more unique if possible). I have a forum that gets roughly 7 registrations a day with no advertising at all, simply because we have a lot of content to offer people.

Fresh content. Make sure you post regularly, make sure posts are interesting and also make sure they are unique.
Create a few dummy accounts initially but be sure to phase them out as members start coming.

Also do some good SEO work and make sure you get the word out.

Try and pick a category for you site that leans towards a crowd who would want to visit often, I've had generic boards, and they've taken off, but have done so the slowest.

Have great content ( that not much forums offer ) on your forum and leave the visitor wanting more, 😉

Example(s) - They might want to ask questions, request services, etc...

I get about half of my membership through search engine results. The rest came mostly via personal recruitment by myself or a few others.

I current don't have a forum, yet, but if I were to, the best way would be probably linkreferral or something.

Youtube - Members

Twitter - traffic
It's best to focus on Search Engine Optimization because after you've finished your seo work, a lot of visitors would be visiting your forum from search engines & you wouldn't have to work a lot when advertising, 😉

LinkReferral really works. I've gotten two members from using it.

One was a member that didn't post at all and the other one just advertised in the wrong section of the forums and never visited again, What more was I expecting, lol.

Does anyone have any experience of webrings?
I've looked at them, although not in tremendous depth because we're difficult to categorise - we're a forum/question and answer site.

Have plenty of off-topic boards in case users don't like your forums genre. 🙂

If you start out specialised, in a way no other forum is in your genre that might be a way to compel people to join if there is enough interest in that subgenre. Try to offer something that no other forum does.

Gain peoples interest, post adverts on other sites, create interesting discussions within your community. I find placing myself in a visitor's place viewing my forum is a great place to start in seeing whether or not I would register an account.

For starters, you have failed in terms of promoting your website, with all due respect. I would suggest you fill in your profile and adding a signature. Usually, having a username with your site link is a major turn off and people may disregard you.
