How do you handle those who open a forum, shut it down, then open a new one?
Going off of the other topic, Wary of joining forums. I was wondering how people handle owners who open up a forum & when they don’t get members or activity, shut it down, only to open a new one up a month later. Wash, rinse, repeat.
I ended up having to make up a rule for myself that I won’t join someone's 3rd forum. Exception are those I do Posting Packages for of course. But I got tired of having to start over all the time.
What about you? Do you have a “rule” you follow when joining forums? What happens if it’s someone’s 2nd, 5th forum? Do you still support them?

It's frustrating for sure. I tend to wait a few months before joining sites like that.

Any time I've seen someone doing this I just stop joining their sites ever, regardless of how long their current one has managed to keep going because in every instance I've seen even that site goes down too, it just takes six months instead of six weeks.

I have been guilty of this way back when I was younger. I'd open a forum, shut it down, then open a new one alll the time. All kinds of different forums which never really took off. I've learned not to do that. I had a kind of successful Harvest Moon forum on Zetaboards, but closed due to lack of interest from users, myself, and the co-admin. We both just agreed to shut the site down. Nipahchan has been around since April of 2022 and has been stagnant in activity. Regardless I still have kept it open!

Not going to lie I've been guilty of doing this myself in the past. :S I've definitely have learned since then, why bother making another forum when I already have one I need to focus on? If I gave up on my current one, then decide to make another one after closing my current one why would I expect anyone to join?

I too am guilty of this, no lie. It wasnt due to lack of.members or activity though. It was due to my own mental health. I get into a habit of creating a new forum and then joining lots.of.other forums because.slots of admins are tit for tat join for join. I feel that in order to get members, I have to join other forums. Then I post alot on their forums and try to find time for my own. This gets overwhelming for me and I have to close.items down for self care reasons.

I know that feeling. There are Packages & Post Exchanges you can do on here to help boost the activity. I'm on A LOT of forums but what helps me is to have a schedule of when I'm on. Some I'm on weekly, others monthly or even every other month. If it's a routine, I can still make time for all the forums YET honor self-care 🙂

I try to avoid those forums as well, I think someone should put a lot of thought and time to planning a forum, if they are consistently closing and opening forums, then all my time and effort to contribute to their forum would be wasted

I've done this myself, even recently. I get a good idea and then try to make it happen and it fails. I have three forums right now and I have a new strategy and that's top just let them do their thing LOL

But I've also seen other forum owners do it way worse than I have so I guess I'm not too bad off.

These days I do not have any issues with these people because I do not join their forums unless I am receiving some sort of incentives. In the past, it was quite frustrating to join new forums from the same person again and again.

I have known a lot of people to do this and it is usually because they are not happy with how fast the forum is growing so they close it and reopen another but they never change the niche of the forum, they just change the name and make it pretty much the same forum. I used to register to forums that did this but after a while, I had to be strict with myself and stop registering to forums like this as I saw it as a waste of my time if I were to register, become an active member, and then the forum was just deleted.

Other hand I seen forums open and five years later still can't get members to join and yet if a new site opens it gets 500 members gets active then closed down LOL

I probably wouldn't join a board where the board owner builds them in cycles. If it becomes a habit it will probably remain one and the board will always be shut down with a new board opening. It's pretty useless to join those types of boards because all of the dedication you gave to that particular message board becomes history.

I have 100 percent decided if Discussion Block ends up failing or so I'm not ever going to own a forum ever again. It's rough as it is owning a forum nowadays. I plan on backing the database up before closure though. I still will not join a persons forum who just opens and closes them constantly.

Yup, agreed. It is useless to join those type of boards.

Ah yeah, for sure. I've seen that too especially in these times on the Internet.
