How long do you give a forum before you take it out back?

Just curious to hear how long people give new forums to grow and take off before they ultimately take it out back and shoot it?

I've launched, ran and sold over 100 forums and I'd say you usually know you've got a winner within the first 3-6 months. What does everyone else think? Obviously this is geared at those that are running forums where traffic/usage is important.

No matter what no forum grows overnight, let alone 6 months. My own forum is almost a year old and we may not be as active as I'd like I don't give up and I have no intention of calling it quits. That's the issue with forums and their owners these days. They don't put in the time and effort necessary to allow their forums to grow and prosper
