When it comes to censoring what is posted on the forum, from curse words to pornography, to even threads that tell everyone someone is leaving and that you have just an absolutely horrible forum.

Where is the line as far as censorship goes? Do you allow curse words, some "adult" language or conversations that kids probably should not be looking at? Do you feel as if it's your responsibility as a forum owner to ensure teens are not subjected to that kind of content?

You can restrict your members with COPPA to avoid censoring too much.

The more I think about swear filters and forum rules, the more I think that forums, in general, should be a lot more laid back. My thoughts on this matter have a lot to do with Reddit, I think. On Reddit, there's generally much less moderation, and swearing is even allowed. The community seems to get along pretty well under those rules. The world doesn't explode or anything. 😛

I personally don't really mind what people say, providing the forum still has a good atmosphere as a whole.

It depends on the forum. If I were running a general forum, I would keep censorship to a minimum if it's needed at all. I would simply require members to be of age to enter r18 /adult sections.

For my own forum, I prefer to keep things professional. I'm not above criticism and leave those posts/ threads publicly visible (touch wood I don't have to remove one in the future).

Our forum is PG13, but we decided not to place censors on curse words. The rules state that swearing is allowed within reason. If someone drops an f-bomb or a shit here and there, no one is going to say anything. If every post and every sentence is filled with profanities, then there are going to be words from a mod.

I did however use xenforo's build in censor to switch out the c**t word for... carrot. Hilarity ensued. A couple of trolls were not happy at all and cried over it. Tough, because some things are unnecessary.

As for Reddit, it is a bit of a cess pool at times.

That is so perfect in so many ways. Lol. I know one forum were people would probably say that word all over the forum just to see it censored to carrot.
