How much money do you invest into competitions as a prize?

Normally, I invest quite a bit in competitions to increase activity and give the forum a boost. Sometimes up to $100 but I also try to find sponsors as well.

It depends what I think the overall activity will be. I don't want to spend too much money only to gain a few new members and a small amount of posts. I am comfortable with competitions that have a member acquisition cost of around $1, or bring in around 10-20 new posts for every $1 spent.

If I'm giving away $100, I'd ideally get 100 new members who stay around for a bit (ideally forever, but that never happens) OR 1,000 new posts because of the contest, or a mix of both (20 members, 800 new posts?).

It's tough to judge and I don't do competitions often. I've found though that competitions that require minimal effort, and an average prize are the best because you get a large amount of members trying to win the prize They think "oh only 5 posts and a chance at $20? That's easy!", meanwhile I'm thinking "ah, two hundred members all posting 5 times for 1,000 posts total and it only costs me $20? Deal".

In a perfect world I would love to have Sponsors offer their services/products unfortunately it's difficult to find though until you can prove your site is successful and can help them gain decent exposure.

I'd be comfortable investing up to $20 at the moment - it would be easier to donate that more for competition if I had a job. Just a few more months maybe. 🙂

Depends on how active the forum is and what the competition is, I think for a beginner forum I would put up $10, and then grow from there as we get more people.

I've ran plenty of competitions and contests but I don't think I've ever given out a real cash prize (just forum-cash). If someone wanted to donate the prize money, I'd be up for it... I spend enough on software, hosting, domain renewals and whatnot as it is. Also I need my money for real world expenses.

I've never had a competition on my forum so nothing, yet. I really have no way to pay them yet so I don't think I'll have one until next year when I get a job.

I would probably spend maybe $50 per contest if I ever decided to, though. I know it's not alot but it's better than nothing, right?

I think that is a lot of money. 😉

Maybe but if I have a job that's paying enough and since I make money from GPT sites I think I'd be able to pay for it, though. 😛

It varies depending on how much money I have to put into competitions. I haven't put much money into competitions myself for a while however when I do I usually make it a good prize to increase interest. I find the longer I have between competitions the more I can save to have a good prize.
