Do you often misplace your phone? Is it on silent when that happens or almost drained of the battery?
I have a habit of placing my phone in the sames spots depending on which room I'm in. I lost it once when it was hooked on my wrist (the case has a strap) and it got caught in a bag I put in my trunk and I didn't notice. I thought it was lost on a hiking trail!
I forget my phone all the time. So these days I am starting to make a note that phone is like wallet. So I tend to remember before placing it in some place.

I have never actually lost a phone. Even if I did, I have the ability to track it's location, force a restart since the boot-loader is encrypted and would require a password before booting, and even if someone did manage to get in, most of my items are MFA'd, so not much could be done.
My phone—upgraded every two years—is always nearby. I've lost them a few times, but they were recoverable. Usually inside my house, and usually in the same places. Under the bed, in between couch cushions, in plain site but just forgot (often on the kitchen counter next to my second set of keys). Thankfully, I've never had to replace a phone.
The main reason I keep good track of it because it has the two-factor authentication codes for my logins. They all have backups, but it would sure be a pain to have to reset them all. It's also my primary source of entertainment when I'm away from the computer.
