How soon do you start preparing your taxes?

I do mine myself once I get my W-2. I get it started, and then I have to go back in and add my 1099 once I get that. I can usually access both online before I receive them in the mail (and usually the W-2 comes first), so I just pull the information that way rather than waiting for it in the mail. I'm usually done by mid-February at the latest.

Don't you just love being able to access the necessary forms online? We don't get ours in the mail until it's almost too late to file!

Yes! I usually get paper copies a couple weeks after I've already done everything or after I've already filed. I also appreciate it when the system auto-fills information for me because they already have a lot of the information from the previous years, and it's just changing some numbers.

Tax prep by a company or accountant? It depends on which way you're filing, if you have a lot of deductibles to go through, etc. We had a friend prepare ours when we lived in another state and I think he charged $100, but that was 10 years ago. We use TurboTax and file online now.

I use an accountant for my taxes. Already started chatting with him. We started in November talking about things. I have our personal taxes that he does for about 300.00 a year. I also have him do my corparations. Which run about 1k a year.

I usually open up TurboTax and try to rush around and get it done just a few days before April 15th.

I like to start gathering all my documents and information as soon as possible, so that I have plenty of time to review everything and ensure accuracy before filing.
