What if you were to find out that your favorite admin or mod or forum member were scamming other forum members? How would you deal with it? And, what precautions can you put into place to ensure no one scams money or services from members of your forum?

If someone was scamming members of my community out of their money or services through my forum, I'd suspend their account immediately or even consider banning them outright. I don't need or want people who are such underhanded assholes as that in my community.

They'd immediately be banned and I'd do all I could to keep them from joining again.

As for preventative measures, it's kind of difficult to make it impossible... you just have to promote people you truly trust will do the job right and not have any hidden agenda.

This is a very good point about promoting someone you trust, however even a very trusted friend can turn into a nightmare when they get rank/power and ruin a forum. With staff, you just have to be active and keep your eye on them all the time.

Indeed. Of course whatever happens between other people is their business and their problem, but you're guilty too if you know a scammer is looking for victims at your forum. Banning them is the best thing to do for the community.

I'd Just van them permanently and probably name and shame them too so people could hopefully avoid them in he future. In regards to people getting power I'm very cautious when it comes to making people staff and only give people I know well alot of powers.

Suspend them, give them one more chance to reform, and if they fail that chance, they're out.

I would ban them, simple. I honestly do not think they should ever be allowed back into the forum however unless enough time has passed. =P Honestly, this kind of thing isn't easily prevented, so hiring the right staff and keeping an eye out is the best bet.

Instant ban seems like the right choice, but they may end up making dupe accounts to return back to the forum. Then, it's time from an IP ban in that case. Scammers might claim they have changed over some time, but they can't be trusted. 😛

I immediately ban them and never allowed them back on the site.

It's important to hear both sides of the story before getting too serious, but usually I take the appropriate action. That depends on the specific case, of course. Sometimes a scam could be someone promising to make posts on someone's forum, but being too busy to complete it.

It's too bad there is not more you can do about scammers, but that's the way it is right now at least. I would probably investigate both sides, especially PM's and email, and then make a decision based on that.

1) I do not allow sales on my site unless that user have been verified. Thus it would be on ME if that person starts to scam ... but I doubt people will go to the length to make a few $$$.

2) If a staff member does scam then it's really nothing that I can do besides ban that user. It's up to that member to contact PayPal or their credit card company to get it resolved.

I personally don't have any form of sales on my forum, but if anyone where to be caught doing anything malicious to another member; the offender would be banned, and shamed.

We have a forum that's designed just for buyer and seller feedback, but if a user is found to be scamming other users, then we just outright ban them.

I think it depends on the scam. A forum currency scam and an in real life dollars scam should be treated completely differently, I think. If anyone scams, they shouldn't be allowed to do exchanges with members ever again, though. For me, it depends on the member's past history. If they've been a problematic member, I'd ban them. If they were a good member, I would just restrict their account.
