I have my site, Mesozoic Haven, which is a dinosaur & reptile forum (primary topic), as well as a gaming site.

I've been unable to think of any uses for XFRM (Resource Manager). Any ideas on possible uses for the addon? Media Gallery has easy uses, but I can't think of any categories/uses for the XFRM.

Do any of ya have any ideas on possible uses for this on either a dinosaur/reptile chat, or gaming site?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: We only have 100GB storage right now, so we can't really host maps or mods for games, as that could fill the storage up much faster.

Have you considered using it as a database? Using it as a resource manager means attaching files for download, so your concerns about storage size come into play, but one thing we did on the GameWinners website just before it went under was attempt to rebuild the old game index using the XFRM and using it to outline every game's tips, tricks and cheats. You could use the XFRM as a Dino Database. Break it down by period: Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous, then by Herbivores and Carnivores, then type and species. It could be a fun project to document the different dinosaurs and provide a valuable resource for your members.

That is true, although we have Bob's AMS addon for articles, that may be better for that sort of thing. His addon may be more SEO-friendly.

True, though I find the organization of XFRM to be slightly better than AMS for categorical content. AMS is awesome for articles and news content, though, I completely agree.

That may be true. For most article & blog-like content, I'd rather use Bob's AMS & UBS add-ons, since they were built for that sort of thing.

If we can ever get to the point where we can get a much larger storage limit, I may enable the ability to upload things like custom Minecraft maps, who knows. Those usually aren't too large, if they're fancy builds and not big survival worlds.

If there are no non-article suggestions, I may disable the addon again haha.

Oh 100%, AMS is the go-to for news and article content. Love it!

Yeah, that could be fun, mods and maps and such.

I mean, technically my idea was a database, or wiki-ish system 😛

But yeah, I understand what you're saying, it's a tough feature to find an ideal solution for unless you have one right off the bat.

wiki-ish system
I'm honestly unsure how to configure RM to be a wiki. There are wiki-like add-ons for XF, or integrations with wiki software, but I am not sure how to make Resource Manager a wiki-like setup. Do you know how to configure it like one?

From what I'm seeing on XF's site, we'd have to cobble together a few things to make it function properly.

Edit: Maybe XF 2.3 could work with its oAuth with an actual wiki software to integrate a shared login with actual wiki software? Though ... It wouldn't match the styling of the rest of the site.

Out of the box, no, it wouldn't be wiki-able, though you can use usergroups to make it as such. Put those you want to edit it into the "RM" group so they have editing permissions, then it's essentially good to go.

Using webhooks in 2.3 and just having a wiki software would work, but as you said, integration with the look and feel would be a struggle.

Hmm... Dunno how to get that going but I can look into it.

Yea, having everything matching would be best. I wouldn't mind buying an actual wiki add-on, but I can't afford anything more than like $10 right now haha.

I'm looking through the phrases, to change "resource" to "wiki" but I can't seem to find a couple specific ones:

As well as the page title from "Resources" to "Wiki" - any ideas? I've changed the nav items to "wiki" fine.

Edit: Figured out "no resources have been created yet." but still haven't found the title one.

Edit 2: Just going through every single phrase to edit them all instead of looking for one or two haha.

You'd just need to setup a "Wiki" usergroup and add in those who want to help edit or that you feel comfortable having the ability to edit to it.

I totally understand, I'm in a very similar boat 🙂

Sorry, been tied up most of this evening, I'm glad you've managed to find at least one of them, and that you're going through them all now, lol.
