Ireland passed gay marriage!

Strange how it is only happening now, I am very pleased though! 😀 I think it's time people started living in the modern era 😛

I was very surprised at this seeing as Ireland is a catholic country. I am very pleased though!

A lot of Catholics, me included, are starting to accept homosexuality 🙂

Which is great news, the Pope seems to be a lot more accepting than previous Popes aswell.

Right! That was pretty much a shock for most of the world, haha.

Well, while this is good that a country has made a law allowing this, it seems odd that a religious country like Ireland would manage to pass it. I wonder how divided the voting was.

Interesting news. As a Catholic myself I'm not sure if the rules have been changed or made more laid back, but it is great to see that minds have started to open up to other possibilities. It actually refers to all homosexual marriages, right? Not only gay but also lesbian?

I have friends who seem to be going this way as well so I'm slowly but surely getting used to it. 😛

Yes the change in the law means homosexuals (both gay and lesbian) are able to marry now.

It's great that this has happened. People should have the right to do what they want without other people bothering them. Hopefully other countries will follow soon

Ireland is not really a religious country anymore, the catholic church has had a lot of scandals recently and many priests have come out in favour of the same sex marriage. The referendum passed by 62% which was great and it was the largest turnout ever for a referendum as well, many people travelled back from ireland especially to vote. Ireland now is a very liberal country and is the first country in the world to pass same sex marriage by popular vote.

I'm very surprised. For such a religious country like Ireland, allowance of gay marriage law seems odd. I'm against gay marriage so I'm pretty much against this law, too.

As lorcan said, Ireland is nowhere near as religious as it might seem. Apart from the older generation, most of the seemingly religious practices are in fact more cultural than anything, you'll find that is the case in the UK too. That's not to say religion is a prerequisite for the "No" vote, I'm sure many non-religious people voted "No", as well as those religious people that voted "Yes."
