Is a forum harmful to a blog?

If the main part of your website is a blog, do you think also having a forum is bad for the blog?

Hmm, I've been wondering whether or not to keep my forum. It goes through spells of being really active, then dead. It has almost 6000 posts.

It depends. If people are more interested in your articles than your forum, then yeah I can see this being an issue. If they're there for the discussions, then I don't see something like this posing much of a harm. I would simply keep an eye on things for a while, and if it becomes all too obvious that the forum is more popular than the site, and you tried everything you could think of, then you may need to take the forum down probably...

Not really. Blogs and forums attract different people, so I don't think one is inherently harmful to the other.

I use a news blog and forum on my own site, and it ends up working pretty well (with the former getting more comments from guests and drive by visitors, the latter having more of a dedicated community of regulars).

Could definitely work out for a gaming site. After all, I've seen quite a few successful gaming sites with both blogs and forums like my own ones, Zelda Informer, Go Nintendo and various others.
