Yes, it would probably be easier to get traffic from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, Digg, Reddit, and similar sites if you already have a lot of friends with similar interest like gaming, tech, sports, and forums, and your friends are active on social networks.

I notice it can take a month or more to get a noticeable amount of traffic from search engines like Google, Bing, etc, but getting traffic from reffering sites like forums, social networks, and other sites can be a good source of traffic and activity when your site is starting up.

But, I think a lot of people like to keep their real life friends, family, co-workers, and Employers on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter from learning about their online activities like forums, websites, and blogs, so using social networks can possibly expose their online life if you use your real name online, and your real life friends, family, and co-workers are also your friends on these social networks, so some people may not want to use social to promote their sites.

I once read in the Newspaper that a bus driver in my city was fired for blogging about his bus driving too much online, so he should of just used a fake username, and not tell people about which company he worked for.

Plus, there also been people who were fired for blogging negatively : http://www.cloudave.com/1500/fired-for- ... 21-9-2009/

It is best to be careful promoting on social networks since it may make your website look bad, or ruin your reputation if your spammy, or misbehaving on social networks while promoting sites.

Interesting. Usually, if I'm going to make a startup, I'll see what I can get on similar sites with a similar memberbase to mine. Of course, personal friends can often help get things started. Sites like this are great.
