Is the turquoise bars too neon and bright?

Not sure if it should be a different color. Note that neons can be irritaiting on computer screens. Anyway, one way to solve is to make the neons darker or not use them.

The icons need to be changed (gaming controller image in them) - if I could figure that out.

I prefer the CSS or PHP way instead of add-ons.

ACP > Appearance > Templates > EXTRA.css

Put this into your CSS:
.nodeList .node.node_yourforumID# .nodeIcon { background-image: url('@images/forum/node-yourforumID#.png');

Of course, substitute "yourforumID#" for the actual ID of the forum that you're modifying.
Keep in mind that this will give each section a unique icon.

The turquoise is okay since you're using a dark background. If you had a lighter background then it would look bad in my opinion.

Gray text on black is easier to read.
