I have heard that the best forum software is VBulletin. It's the most expensive, but I don't really like the look of it 😛 I know that sounds immature, but is it really? I should like the look of my forum first of all...

What do yiu guys think of VBulletin? Is it the 'king' of forum software?

I think if you go back several years it was one of the best and maybe even the "king" of forum software, but with increasing competition from other softwares, I think some of them are just as good if not even better.

Not anymore. Back 4-5 years ago it would've been considered as the "King." Now competition such as IPB and XenForo has shown up, and VB hasn't picked up their game enough to be a top notch forum software.

If I were to spend money on a forum software; it would be on IPB or XenForo. Both of them are very flexible, and have the modern features that VB currently lacks.

What features, please? 🙂

Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing about you
I have no idea where you got 'ZetaBoards' from my post
IPB = Invision Power Board
XF = XenForo (I know I said ZF in my original post but I still don't see how ZF = ZetaBoards...)
Please, go on
Do tell me where I mentioned ZetaBoards in my post

As others have said, vBulletin used to have this title why doesn't really any more. I don't think a single forum software has a solid control of the market at the moment. Each of the major players has a fairly similar market share, from what I understand. However, I wouldn't be surprised if vB still had the most licenses, as a lot of websites still run it.

From what I've experienced as a non-administrator on forums that used the software, I find it simply good. It doesn't blow my socks off or anything, but it has its merits of attracting the most visitors for any kind of content. I don't like the interface a lot, however, which is a bit generic-like.

Xenforo seems interesting, but MyBB is still my personal pick.

vB is a joke these days. They are losing followers & customers fast.

IPB & XF are better paid solutions.

IPB is the best in my opinion though Xenforo(as overrated as it is and overpriced) and Woltlab Burning Board (Underrated as it is) are also good alternatives.

Vbulletin is only King as it has the most installations but it is also greatly losing them.

vBulletin used to be immensely popular a few years ago. In fact, if you were into forums a few years ago, almost all of the bigger ones were running vB. Now, if you visit the same websites, most of them have switched over to Xenforo, and a few have gone to IPB.

You've got to give vBulletin some credit though, I think it really paved the way for the future of forum software.

Definitely. The first forum I ever joined around 7-8 years ago ran on vBulletin and I absolutely loved it. I liked the structure, I liked the design, and the community was awesome. That was my entrance to online forums, and until I got to know other software better I used to think that everything else sucked compared to that website that ran on vBulletin.

I still like vBulletin, honestly. I never had to run a forum with it as an administrator, though. So as far as global moderator, I think it is still an awesome software with great tools, good layout, and nice features for members and moderators. Perhaps the back end of the system is the bigger problem for this software, which is too bad.

Nowadays even free software can offer awesome features so competition gets more fierce.

vBulletin hasn't been king since Kier left to develop Xenforo. The software has really gone downhill over the years and I used to be a huge supporter of vBulletin, but not anymore.

-- 25 Apr 2015, 06:13 --

vBulletin hasn't been king since Kier left to develop Xenforo. I don't think it really is. In my eyes, it is very old like phpBB. I would use a different forum software to start one. Unless you have the licence from a trade etc, you should not buy one.
