Member Activity: How have you gotten (and kept) yours up?

In your experience what was the best way to up member activity? Especially for niche forums? Here is a better question: what have you done to a) promote your forum and b) engage users while they're there?

To promote mine, affiliating works best as well as vigorous sig advertising too. And as for keeping my members active, it's all about new threads being posted. I heard that running monthly contests help with that too.

sig advertising is what I do allot, but never the less it doesn't work at the best times. You get traffic but not new members

Same here, But I think if I really give time to it, I think I can do it.
But, since I'm employed and only doing this at night I can't.
