So perhaps someone will sign up and ask to be staff out of the blue. Or they will post a topic after making a few posts and think OMG I CAN BE THE STAFF NOW <3

It really does scare me when people do that. I have to be frank and say it's scarier seeing a topic like this than watching American Horror Story

I have had this happen to me and it almost makes me want to snap so instead I just post a meme of Grumpy Cat with no at the bottom :cheer:

Have you ever been a staff member on a forum where a member who has barely made any posts request a staff position?

I know, right?

Yeah, people shouldn't do this. 😛 Especially on large forums. Even if you think you'd do a great job, you have to prove yourself to the forum first before they'll consider you for staff, even if you can write up an awesome app.

Yes. 😛

I mean usually it doesn't bother me much, however if they keep on asking if they can be staff even when I direct them to the application or simply say "we are not hiring" (because we aren't hiring..) then it becomes an issue. 😛

I actually hired someone with 100 posts as mod but his first post was asking if he could be staff. 😛 Things are possible but yeah, it bugs me when people do that. xD

I think it should be common sense for someone to be active on a forum way before you get staff, asking for staff is the big no no on all of the new forums, mainly because it's an annoyance. 😛 Asking HOW one can be staff, when applications open, etc, I have no issue with. Asking if they can be staff however is different. 😛

Some people after being told the word no will leave though.

I think its different if they only asked after posting a thousand posts and topics and contributed, rather than sign up. Post here and there, have 20-40 posts and be like....gee....I think I should move up now!.....um....no. 😀

What gets me is the one-week hit promotion forums that used to pop up every now and then, where a user would sign up, make 4 posts and then become a staff member, and the site would close the following week... and then the same user would be staff at a similar site in another week. It was a vicious cycle. Ah, the old days.

I've run into this situation a few times and it really annoys me because they think can become staff without any effort whatsoever. They're mostly inexperienced forum users, I think. They just need to be educated. 😛

sometimes I think they act like this for the fun of it.

I've seen this a few times. What's even more scary is an administrator actually accepting said "applications", and providing them with a position on the team without really getting to know the individual.

how you know a man can do or can not do something, when you just see they do it very little with your bere eyes? They may work a lot in other forum, or may practice themself good somewhere else. I think they relly want to take the job, so they just ask even they knew that they contribute very few posts. I think it's ok. 🙂

I usually tell these members they are welcome to send an application, and it will be considered for a few months. And that this is their "proving themselves" time. See what they can do. I'm not against members with so few of posts wanting to be staff, however it's weird if that's all they do. It makes me think they are a banned member or something just wanting to come back for who knows what reasoning. 😛

I've had this happen before I put a time & post commitment before you could apply for staff. You had to be a member for x months and have at least x posts (in the range of 50-75). This weeded out most of the issues as usually only committed members would be the ones who continue to stick around and contribute to the community.

Unless they are a REALLY good friend of mine, I will not hire anyone that does that unless I have a hiring topic up with an application for them to fill out, etc. I don't like people that beg for staff especially if we aren't even hiring then.

When people brown nose me for a mod position, it usually involves going on a mental blacklist of people who will never be a mod in the near future, not without growing up and calming down first. People who do that usually make terrible moderators. They're bossy, troublesome, and get in fights around the site. They're also highly likely to hand out infractions for very small things because they need things to do in order to "feel the powah." We've all been on forums with that kind of staff. (I've even got infracted for saying the word "feck" and I'm from Ireland. It's a thing.) It just alienates the userbase. ^^

I dont mind when people ask for the requirements, expectations etc. I even dont mind people when asking for expectations hinting or stating that they are interested; I dont like however people that make a couple of quick posts and expect to become staff

My approach for promoting staff is less "who wants it" and more "who is competent", so new users asking to be staff are either ignored or dealt with copious levels of sarcasm, as the situaiton calls for it.

Yes it happens. Of course, we don't let them become staff members however we seriously consider them in the future particularly if they become regular members. It also depends on how they conduct themselves in the forum. There are so many factors that go into the consideration of hiring a staff member, one of our main things that we look out for is how likable they are. We've had issues in the past with moderators being too aggressive and completely turned off members - each staff member is a representation of the community as a whole so it's important to be picky about who you hire.
