Journalist Jane Moore goes in search of women who left their children to pursue their own ambitions, and talks to the youngsters and fathers left behind.

An author left her children to pursue her career as a writer. She came out about the fact she left her children to do this in a newspaper article. A passenger, a woman, on the same train and herself, spat at her when she recognized the author.

You may ask why is this a taboo subject, it is as mother's are supposed to stay with their offspring not walk away. Even if they children are better cared for by their husbands or other family members. Women who abandon their children are still ostracised by society even today.

Today's world of a more relaxed easy going culture, still attacks those mother's who for a myriad of reasons leave their children.

So what makes mothers leave their children?

* Mental health issues
* Careers
* Lack of maternal care
* Marital problems

These are often the majority of reasons some women leave their children.

If a man leaves his children, nobody bats and eyelid or spits on them. Yet why does a woman attract such hostility?

I guess it's because the woman gave birth to them and an element of sexism.

Though personally I have no sympathy for the woman in question, leaving her children for her career, selfish arsehole as far as I see it.

i dont think i could ever leave a child that i may have! i think that is really selfish to leave you child for anything i have grew up with the thought that the child comes first!

People frown upon father's that leave their children all the time, maybe not as much as mother's but there's no doubt that father's who abandon their children are seen as bad people. The reason I think it's more so for mothers is simply the fact that mothers are supposed to stay with their offspring, in any species (most at least), they do to care for them. If a mother leaves and doesn't care for her children, she isn't doing the right thing.

ya that's not cool. If you don't want kids..why have kids at all? some 'mothers' should have thought about this long before they had kids before they decided they didn't want kids.

No one should be treated differently for leaving their children. They both brought them into the world.

Unfit parents
yes, I'm not religious, but I think Children are Angels that parents must love & protect, no matter what.

Personally I don't think that a mother should willing give up her children to do something like this. My children are gone from me right now but I didn't have a choice, and I didn't even do anything wrong. It was all because of the babysitter murdering my middle child while I was at work. I've been fighting for a year to get them back and not a moment goes by that I don't fight for them. I don't understand how women, or fathers for that matter can just give up their children if they have the option to keep them.

There are certain unforeseen circumstances that I can understand like if a woman is forced to have sex against her will and then conceives a child, or in my situation or any other unforeseen major circumstance, but willing doing this just to write and become an established author... I do not agree with this at all.

I think it's because mothers are the ones who give birth to children, therefore they are supposed to be more attached to their youngsters than the fathers.

Its as if she had kids and then found out its not for her and that isn't the first case like that it happens all around the world. Good thing is that there are some fathers that do care and don't leave the kids as well.
