Movies costs money to make. Producers get back their investment when the film is shown in theaters. What happens when movie streaming becomes the order of the day? What if the theaters close down? No new movies will be produced. Just my thoughts on the trend of streaming because movie producers are already complaining on the lost revenue opportunities.

already been happening, People rather save more then spending £11 on a ticket

New movies should be streamed on payment only - though I understand that its not going to make much of a difference.

I agree. New movies that just came out should be streamed by payment only, just like buying a ticket to go and see it in a theater. After a while of being released, it can then be seen on streaming services just like any other movie.

I can see new movies totally being released online and the movie theater eventually fading away. When is the question. Am I happy about that fact? No, but I can see it happening the way things are going.

I don't know about where everyone else lives but the movie theaters in my area are always PACKED. Their parking lots are always filled with cars and seats sell out fast. When the economy is in the toilet, people tend to seek out cheap local entertainment rather than going on an extravagant vacation. This means movie theaters, restaurants, water slides, go kart tracks, comedy clubs, bars/pubs, etc, etc, get a boost. These types of venues allow people to have a night out without spending too much of their hard earned money.

Forgive me if I don't believe this.

Studios have said for generations that each new tech will ruin them. They said that:
- with file sharing programs like Limewire.
- when commercially available cd/dvd burners came about.
- when VHS came out (music producers said cassettes would wreck them).
- when channels started airing movies (or for musicians, when the radio aired songs).

But every time it hasn't happened. Their claim is just BS for their investors to try to cover up the fact that they didn't make as much money as they thought they would. They told their investors they would hit <X amount> but they only made <W amount>. Investors are angry, company has to find some excuse... Some times it's pirates, other times it's whatever the popular technology is. Of course they can't tell the truth... that the movies either weren't that great or people didn't care for them.

The death of theatres hasn't happened then because people still valued going to the theatre and seeing things there. Because people still value that they will continue to go. The only way this will really change is if they start charging even higher prices, so much so people can't afford them, and don't deliver a quality experience.

Same thing here. Usually the theaters are always packed. I don't see them dying anytime soon. Maybe in 50 years from now they might but that's a long shot. Theaters will always find ways to bring people back. Theaters where I live has made a lot of cool/awesome changes like having Laz-y boy chairs (they are huge and so comfy!) to get people coming back.
The prices are expensive though to see a movie and I only see the price going up. I don't go to the theater often. I wait for it to come out and then I'll buy it if I think I'll really like it.

This is a good and affordable thing for movie producers. This will make them earn what they have invested.

The bassist for KISS was trying to argue the same things about the music industry - claiming free downloading deprived music companies of the means to bring in new talent - hence, why the bassist claims that the music now is mediocre.

I don't think streaming will totally kill theaters. Business owners who own theaters make money off of movies too. Theaters have always been a long time tradition in the industry and that is something that will be very hard to do away with.

streaming don't kill the thearters, but it will reduce the revenue of the film producer. Think about spending a lot of money and effort to make a product and wanted to sell it, but someone brought it for free distribution... Hmm... no good. Those who take such action must be severely punished

The movie theaters in my area are always packed full so I doubt that.
