With the rise of teen takeovers in malls, beaches, whatever...should there be a nationwide curfew? Most curfews allow for teens to travel to work and home, so it wouldn't affect those.

We use dispersal orders in the UK to prevent anti-social behavour and crime. It's hard to say how effective they are long term but they do seem to work in the short term, allowing the police to direct people away from a specific area and confiscate items such as alcohol.

Personally I'd like to see more emphasis placed on the parent in these situations.

How many teens are from single parent households these days? It could be a contributing factor to behavior.

For sure but I think the reasons are less to do with the single parent and more likely based on economic factors. Poverty, poor quality housing etc.

Where I live there isn't really an issue for that. Most teens are at home on social media, there's no 24/7 stores anymore, there's really not much for kids to do delinquently anymore it seems. I really do not see an issue with it personally and I live in a city. It may be a smaller one with 45k residence but it's a city nonetheless lol

One of the neighboring cities has a curfew of 10pm for those under 18 now because of the rise in crime and rumors of "teen takeovers." They changed things back in March and April after there were some shootings at the beach (no fatalities from what I recall). They even briefly did a citywide curfew for a specific area of the beach for a weekend or two initially, after the shootings, but a lot of people got upset about it because it affected everyone that wanted to go into that area and they ended up dropping it after one or two weekends but kept the 10pm curfew citywide for the minors. The curfew doesn't affect those traveling to and from work.

Unsure how much it's helping as I'm not really in that city for too long after 10pm most of the time. There's a skating rink I go to there on Friday nights, but there's almost always at least one sheriff there to help monitor things and the kids, for the most part, are pretty good about leaving on time (they also make announcements to remind them to call their rides to be there by 10pm). Only other time was when I was driving a friend home after D&D, but it was like 1-2am on what would've been a school night for the kids. I'm guessing it's helping, at least on the weekends when the kids are out of school, since I haven't heard quite as much news, but we probably won't really see the real effects of it until they're out of school in the next few weeks.

When I was a teenager we had a curfew, we couldn't be out after 10 PM. I remember one time one of my friends in high school got picked up by a cop because she was walking home from another friend's house at around midnight. I thought most places had curfews already but I think I might be wrong about that then lol. I think there should be, most kids are inside though like @Xyphien mentioned.

I remember a curfew when I was a teenager too!! Kind of the opposite happened to me and my friend though because back in the 80s teenagers looked like they were 30 LOL So cops left us alone 😀

In my opinion, when minors are repeatedly out causing trouble, the conversation shouldn't focus solely on the teenagers themselves. Parents and guardians also play a significant role in providing guidance, supervision, and accountability. A person's values and behavior often begin at home, so it's reasonable to discuss parental responsibility as part of the solution.

That said, every situation is different. While some parents may be neglectful and deserve to be held accountable, others may be making genuine efforts and still struggle with challenges beyond their control. Rather than automatically imposing fines or jail time, it may be more effective to consider a range of consequences and support systems that encourage both parental involvement and youth accountability. Holding parents more accountable could encourage stronger responsibility at home rather than only reacting once things escalate publicly.
