Considering that social media is hurting forums and blogs - one strategy might be to follow the title. Anyway, what might they be? Well, not making a comment on it one way or the other - but porn is one. Of course, controversial political ones (hate speech) is another. But are there any niches less disturbing we can speak of here?

I don't really think there is. As long as it's nothing too explicit or controversial then it's allowed for both Social Media and Forums.

With software / web development / etc, I think forums are more beneficial than social media.
There are so many highly specific topics in these niches that aren't given justice on social networks. Social media can bring in a lot of different replies and perspectives, but the replies are often not of the same caliber as a well written forum discussion or response.

Additionally, I think forums provide more of a "permanent spot" for content whereas social media content is very rarely immortalized in the search engines. Sure, a page might show up in the listings, but it's very rare to see a social media post (even if it's an article) show up in Google compared to seeing a well written article on a blog or a forum. I think forums are still great for tech topics, and that's why there's so many forums still around.

Especially with open source, it's very important to have a structured environment for feedback, requests, and discussions. You can't really get this on social media with the "wall" of pages or profiles. You really do need separate sections and tags to apply to different types of responses. Even Reddit is disorganized when it comes to this, and they have custom tags/flair for their content.

So, to answer your question - I believe that tech support, specific tech discussions, and development are all better off on a structured forum than on a social network. I am not talking about general tech forums... those are better off on social media. But for SPECIFIC tech (for a specific software, programming language, etc), I think forums are still winning.

What I can't get from social media is advice or how someone's experience was from a product, health/surgery, etc...

If I need to know something like how to fix or repair something for my home, I search YouTube on how to go about doing it. But if I want to know if a repair fix worked or any other tips I search out those words for the repair and then add on Forums at the end so that I can learn what other people have to say about it.

Health is a big search for me on Forums after reading the medical sites. I want to know how other people have dealt with what I went through. I want to know how long it took them to heal. What they did to improve the quality of their life after surgery, etc.... I can't get that on social media. I rely on Forums.

I find out that social media censoring the opinion. For example facebook being left wing and SJW, they censor the traditional conservative opinions. So creating reddit subreddit or forums or blogs for those opinion can be definitely useful. Niches like (adult content, adult stories and many other) can get you banned on social media. But you can create forums and blogs for them without any ban hammer of sort.

Yeah, Facebook seems uptight about stuff. That's why I'm reluctant to throw money (to FB) with certain projects. The content on such forums could get my account banned.

Maybe a "How-To" or "Tutorial" niche will do, because this kind of niche needs a long post, and social media can't cover it aside from pinterest because it can use infographs.

Never thought of that! That makes sense.
