Saw these stories the past few days, and got a good laugh about them. A country that is struggling to feed its citizens is threatening war on two of the strongest military forces in the world!
It's self-preservation. Same with the nuclear crap.
The last thing North Korea wants is to be steamrolled by the US, South Korea, etc. And you can't blame North Korea for trying to flex given US recent history.
Just think about this and the impact it would have on you as a leader of one of those countries:
“We’re going to take out seven countries in 5 years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran” - General Wesley Clark. Retired 4-star U.S. Army general, Supreme Allied
Commander of NATO during the 1999 War on Yugoslavia
That's the role the US has taken in the world. We only fuel the nuclear troubles as countries with "less favorable" governments try and preserve what they've built.
In reality, North Korea actually wants to open up. I have a few connections who have spent time in North Korea in recent months. One in particular was representing Yum! Brands. Yes, North Korea wants a KFC. The Dear Leader likewise wants a new golf course and of course the North Korean basketball team to win gold in the Olympics (despite North Korean males being, on average, 5 inches shorter than South Korean males).

In any actual war involving North Korea, especially on non-North Korean soil, soldiers would defect en masse. Any missile they had would be dealt with our anti-missile defenses (see large laser capable of exploding missile in air). The reality is that the South Koreans could probably roll the North Koreans with US air, naval, and drone support.
Even their "ally" in China would leave them for dust.
