People who ask for account deletion

Sometimes; it depends on the forum. You could always just change the username and the password, and remove it from their possession if you want to keep the account active.

No I don't.

I just give them a permanent ban. If they ever decide they want to come back, they have to email me.

I find this the best way incase they want to come back

No. I highly suggest not deleting a member's account. #1 because it takes away from your total registered users, and #2, it makes you look sort of like a pushover to silly member demands. There is no good reason to have an account deleted, even if it's a spam bot.

No - they may have a not-so-good underlying reason why. I would ask them why, if they have a really good reason why then I would change their username and password to something else.

My usual reply is: ''if you don't want to have an account here, then don't post with it. Sooner or later all your content will be lost under piles of other threads, trashed or archived.''

I am reluctant to delete users accounts when they request it as it is not always easy to verify they are the real owner.... Especially when it had been a while since their last post and they have changed ISPs since or logged into a different location. Compromised accounts is one reason why i never would allow users to delete their own account.

Deleting posts when deleting users is not a good idea, especially if they have alot of posts. It can mess up previous discussions where it will look users are talking to their selves.

Pretty much what Fowler said. I remember an old site where Admin allowed this and users always ended up coming back and requesting their account back.

I don't see any reason why somebody would want to delete their account, if they don't want to be on the site, then simply don't visit it anymore.

I have allowed one member to do that on my place, I regret it now, as it messes the topics given the impression guests can posts where they are not supposed to. It just never occurred to me the changing the account details, hahah.

I think if someone ever asks me to do that on my forum, I would probably just change the account details. Like I noticed with one user here on FP they simply change the person's username to Expired Account. That'd be a pretty good idea right there.

I do not delete it, just if the user really wants too. Many people who asks to have their account deleted will come back someday.

I haven't had the situation arise yet, but if it was the case, I'd just ban them and not delete the account.

Hi

If a user asked me to delete there account then sure i would delete there account.

Well i could change the username to anything else and give an rank of ban even tough they are not ban .So other users don't talk about him .

The reason why we usually do that is in order to keep that user and information about that user because of the circumstances around why they are no longer at this site. In the example i think you are referring to, i think you will know why we wanted to keep the account and all the IP's that were associated with that account.

That's understandable. I can also see why you would do that as well, for future references, right? Especially with all the spamming and hacking attempts around lately, you can deny that person access to this forum, but at the same time, you'll have their account information in case you're ever asked for proof that yes, the member has been here and this is what he's done. I hope I'm interpreting that right.

Yeah thats what i mean. When you are trying to build a case against someone and trying to keep them away from the site, having access to all their IP addresses they have used and be able to easily find out when they used that IP etc can be very useful.

The second you delete an account, all the posts become no longer associated with an account and it is not easy to get the info needed on that user.
