phpBB3 information

Phpbb3 is superb in my opinion, at first it looked a tad more complicated but I got used to it.

If you compare phpBB2 and phpBB3 then you can just see that they are miles apart and they don't even look like they are made by the same group.

The thing that annoys me is people who say this forum is not good as it runs phpBB and they think phpBB3 is rubbish but they have never used phpBB3 but only phpBB2. They don't understand the difference between phpBB2 and phpBB3.

It was a big step in quality imo. I'm happy I started all over again with phpbb3. -happy-

I think PHPbb is great, ok maybe PHPbb3 could be a bit more "noob friendly" as some things are quite hard to find sometimes, but once you've got the hang of it...then your off

I was confused in the first few days, some things I didn't get, especially how to make forums (yes I had trouble with that). But luckily i've learned basically everything eventually. -8)-

There still are a few things I do not know how to use properly, but I think I have almost figured it out now

^Dont forget, theres a major difference in free phpBB hosts compared to hosting phpBB yourself as well. Many more features when you host yourself, and lots of new shiny buttons to play with as well -😉-

I think I am happy with a free host. -happy-

If I was on my own i'd probably stuff it up.

That isn't always the case. With phpBB you could easily install it and just forget about it and not touch it so you won't be able to mess it up. It is only if you want to start adding mods you can mess it up. Even then if you have a backup of the files and db you won't lose anything if it goes wrong.

The goods outweigh the bads when deciding wether or not to get a real "host" and install phpBB yourself. It really does help you to learn, as youll need to read tutorials and such to understand how everything goes together. I reccomend that everyone does it.

Okay, i'll try and keep that in mind. -happy-

This was a good review of phpbb3, especiall on bots since I'm kind of new on that topic.

Google bot came by about 4 weeks ago. Haven't seen it or any other come by since. Guess they didn't like my forums?

To start off with bots won't visit that often but once they become aware of it and sites start linking to you and the activity on your forum increases then the bots will visit more.

Yeah as Fowler says, the more your site is updated with good new content, the more frequently the crawler will return.

I'm on PHPBB3 atm and I love it. I did have My Christian Friends on PHPBB2, and I didn't really care for that at all. The boards looked unorganized compared to version three. Version three is definetly a lot better.

And we can only hope that it keeps getting better. phpBB4 'should' have alot more than phpBB3 and phpBB2 combined.

That goes for all software though, not just phpBB.

It will be along while until phpBB4

Although phpBB3.2 is current being developed which will have quite a few new additions.

I know, and I dread that fact. I don't see them adding the type of features I see IPB and vB adding in the near future. Most of these features would require a re-write of coding that comes along with a new version number of phpBB.

Let's just pray they don't fall too far behind, and the MODding community passes the test of time :\

phpBB 3.2 will require all (well, nearly all) mods to be rewritten as it, as they've removed $phpbb_root_path and $phpbb_ext.
