From what I understand, a website or a forum can earn money from the ads that are showing on the pages. But where do those ads come from? All I know about ads is Adsense of Google but that is not very profitable since I have been reading complaints of slow earnings (from Adsense). Are there other means of placing advertisements on the webpages and being paid for the clicks?

This site uses BuySellAds, I tried AdSense but wasn't a fan. I tend to block ads anyway.

All websites have ads, and not many that doesn't. Ads gives them earnings and with the cash it keeps the website going. That being said in my three years running I never got paid for the earnings from ads.
  1. Google had an big crash in Feb and since google doesn't want to loss there income they taken 20% of everyone who is with them, even YouTube and MCN partners got effected.
  2. Those people that visit using ad-block takes away that extra earnings. Tangs silly people.
  3. AdSense is the biggest yet google tends to make more money and never gives
So Yeah

I just prefer Adsense because their ads are higher quality, rather than those that try to trick people into clicking them by pretending to be an official component of your site. It doesn't really matter if you have them in a box making it clear they're ads; it's trashy.

Yet did you receive earnings?

It actually depends on your forum niche as well and the kind of demographic it attracts. Affiliations are a good idea. I mean signing up as an affiliate with companies in your niche. You put a link that they give you on your site. When the customer clicks that and purchases something from them within a certain timeframe, you get 5% or something like that.

Sometimes (especially big forums) you can make money through advertising or paid stickies, however the majority of the time you'll end of losing more than you make. My forum is a hobby project and I don't mind the small amount of money I lose.

At least for the employment niche, Adsense and Indeed are great.
